by Andrew Morrison | A cooperage is one of the more satisfying and fascinating stops when doing a bourbon pilgrimage in Kentucky. Barrel-making is one of those things that still requires an old school touch, as demonstrated in this short film on the hard work that goes down at Louisville’s Kelvin Cooperage, where they make a mix of new barrels and old barrel restorations. It’s amazing to think that after its one and only bourbon fill each virgin barrel will then be sold on to a Scotch whisky distillery, where it will take even more fills for longer maturations, imparting its unique characteristics for potentially 50+ years.
