There are countless complex processes that people live in complete ignorance of. Nuclear fission is a representative example. Most know absolutely nothing about it except that it is exceptionally dangerous (actually, most don’t even know if that much is true). We approach the mechanics of aerosol, malolactic fermentation, alternator belts, and espresso machines with the same blank looks and nods from the remote peripheries of understanding. We know what they are, but as to how they actually work…well, we’re in complete darkness.
