Vancouver, BC | Originally from Winnipeg, Alex Black has done the rounds behind the wood in Vancouver with stints at Donnelly Group, Glowbal Group and Hawksworth. Now bartending at the Vancouver Club, Black is also the Cocktail Director for this Saturday’s Deighton Cup, an afternoon of horse racing, fashion and cocktails held at Hastings Racecourse, presented by Cocktails & Canapés.

As Cocktail Director, Black was charged with creating a custom welcome cocktail for 1,500 VIP guests. The result: The Railbird, a Bourbon-based take on a traditional Horse’s Neck cocktail that incorporates peach jam as an nod to the Kentucky Derby.

“Since I’m hosting the 3rd Annual Cocktail Jockey Competition at Deighton Cup this year, I can’t take part in the competition. We have 12 of the city’s top bartenders creating their versions of a traditional Horse’s Neck in front of an all-star judging panel, so The Railbird is a little like me throwing my hat into the ring,” says Black.

“In fact, making 1,500 cocktails is actually easier than making four for the judges,” he says. “At least it’s less stressful. Once you have your ratios, you just need enough people to shake and pour.”

THE RAILBIRD

Ingredients:

2 oz Bulleit Frontier Bourbon
? oz Peach Jam
¼ oz Honey Syrup
½ oz Lemon Juice
Ginger Beer to top
Lemon peel twist

Method:

Shake over ice in a cocktail shaker
Strain into a Highball Glass
Top with Ginger Beer
Garnish with lemon twist
