The GOODS from Summerhill Pyramid Winery

Kelowna, BC | Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s celebrated Sunset Organic Bistro has reopened for the season, promising a touching dining experience that is sure to engage both the palate and the spirit.

Earlier this year, it was announced that winery Chef Jonas Stadtländer is taking the helm at the Bistro, bringing with him a wealth of global culinary experience gained in Japan, Toronto, Germany and Australia. You can read more about Chef Stadtländer HERE.

Working with local organic producers as well as with seasonal ingredients from Summerhill’s onsite gardens and wild areas, Chef Stadtländer expects that the menu will change frequently as the freshest offerings become available. Locally-sourced stinging nettle pasta is currently featured, as well as sourdough bread crafted from Stadtländer’s own organic starter, offering diners a light and airy crumbed-bread with pleasantly tangy flavour. Stadtländer sources certified-organic whole Berkshire pigs from Wild Moon Organics in Armstrong, which are butchered in-house for a variety of uses so that nothing is wasted, including homemade charcuterie, bacon, ham hock terrines, sausage for pizza and Cassoulet, and pulled pork from the leg for Asian-style sliders.

“Having access and availability to such superior quality ingredients is key to our approach,” says Stadtländer. “I’m inspired by what is currently happening here at Summerhill and am looking forward to adding exciting and unique ingredients to the menu as the season progresses.”

Stadtländer has even created a “Junior Foodies” menu featuring items that will offer surprising appeal to even the most discerning young palates, including tomato risotto-stuffed omelettes and Teriyaki chicken rolls battered in Tempura.

“Kids will surprise you,” Stadtländer continues. “We want to keep it interesting and healthy for our youngest guests as well.”

The bistro itself has gone through many significant changes over the course of the winter, including the installation of new natural cork flooring and updates to the seating and lighting, culminating in a comfortable, warm and welcoming experience for visitors of all ages.

Beginning Wednesday, April 1, the Sunset Organic Bistro, located at 4870 Chute Lake Road in Kelowna, is open for lunch and dinner daily.

ABOUT SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERY

8510964419_fb50c3ce5a_o

Summerhill Pyramid Winery is a pioneering Okanagan Valley winery established in 1991. Owned and operated by the Cipes family, the winery has been a leader in organics, converting their own vineyard holdings to organic status shortly after the property was acquired in 1986, and helping to convert over 200 acres of Okanagan vineyards to certified organic status since then. The home vineyard in Kelowna is, as of 2012, BC’s first Demeter certified biodyamic vineyard. Summerhill considers their plots to be ‘vineyard ecosystems’ rather than viewing them as industrial farms. The philosophy of winemaking is that organic and biodynamic grapes, grown in harmony with the ecosystem, is the starting point for authentic, expressive, terroir driven wines. The portfolio of Summerhill wines has earned Summerhill the title of ‘Canadian Wine Producer of the Year’ from the IWSC in London, England (2009).

Summerhill has also been at the forefront of sparkling wine production in the Okanagan. The winery was founded with the production of Cipes Brut, a traditional method cuvee based on Riesling and Chardonnay, and has gone on to garner international acclaim for sparkling wines, including a gold medal from France (Chardonnay du Monde, 2000) and a trophy from England (IWSC, 2010), both for the estate grown Cipes Gabriel Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine.

The winery is also home to the Sunset Organic Bistro, featuring seasonal Okanagan wine paired cuisine in a rustic, relaxed atmosphere. Executive Chef Jonas Stadtländer draws from the bounty of regional organic farmers, including an onsite half-acre biodynamic vegetable patch.
