On Ridiculing Pick-Up Artists And Failing Miserably At Social Media

IMG_0754

by Sean Orr | Niqabs ‘rooted in a culture that is anti-women,’ Harper says. What he conveniently forgets is how much his own culture is anti-woman, too. And really, why blame one religion when you can blame the all?

Tory MP John Williamson Sorry For ‘Offensive’ Language About TFW Program. The elephant in the [cabinet] room: everyone knows that “foreign” means “brown”.

Vote strategically: How the NDP plans to win it all. Ooh! Ooh! Is it by shifting to the centre? “He left the impression that NDP guns will be concentrated less on the Conservatives than Justin Trudeau…” Oh. I see. That old chestnut. Good luck.

How to fail at social media: BC Ferries complaint gets @BCFerrys parody twitter account suspended. They should’ve take their cues from Kingsgate Mall.

Mainstream contradiction: Irrational fear department taking over. “A fire in a container facility is a scary thing. It’s like a Rubik’s Cube from hell, or a massive, toxic shell game.” So the fear we felt was not irrational?

You’re fired: Pane of glass falls from Trump Tower under construction in downtown Vancouver. The only thing that could shatter the project’s image more was if they put a Drai’s Vegas-style nightclub at the top.

Referendum round-up: Vancity Buzz posts 6 reasons to vote no in transit plebiscite, of which none are valid, because even though you hate Translink, David Suzuki has 5 reasons to vote yes. I mean, who do you trust more?

Though, as the Straight points out, a “yes” vote in the transit referendum won’t make the 99 B-Line smell better, and a no vote will make sure it smells bad forever?

Also, it’ll be Vancouver’s ‘Rob Ford’ Moment.

Finally, someone made a video called This Sucks Vancouver. Not only is it funny, it made Bob Mackin think it was a secret Vision Vancouver initiative, so it’s basically a win-win.

Put down artist: Women raise concerns over Vancouver pick-up artist. Ugh. Over to you XKCD.

Bit of fun: Ryan the A&W Trainee reappears, beggin’ to get his old job back.

In memoriam: Rebel Spell Frontman Todd Serious Dies in Climbing Accident.

  1. Thanks for making me laugh. Contrary to popular opinion, I do that very frequently and sometimes without control. The point was that several media outlets were identifying the people behind the well-done This Sucks YVR campaign as just some friends who got together and did a video. One of them is a principal and the other a writer with an advertising agency called Point Blank Creative, which counts Unifor, David Suzuki Foundation and City of Vancouver (all campaigning for a Yes win) as clients. Point Blank hosted a fundraiser for Yes-campaigning Vision Vancouver http://pointblankcreative.ca/blog/photos-creative-evening-gregor-robertson-patti-bacchus-andrea-reimer/ Nothing wrong with any of that and This Sucks YVR says it wasn’t hired by Vision. Its messaging and style, intentionally or unintentionally, vaguely dovetails with the style used in Vision’s 2011 campaign creative.
I’m a former staff writer with Marketing magazine and I have covered elections since 1991, way back in the analogue era. It is common for advertising and PR people to contribute their services to parties and causes during election campaigns, sometimes pro bono, but most-often under-the-radar (political parties don’t publish line-ups of who does what behind the scenes). It’s a brand-building, networking strategy that often results in new contracts with public bodies if a certain party wins. (See: http://thetyee.ca/News/2014/09/15/Clark-Loyal-Ad-Agency/).
If Yes wins, and if the This Sucks YVR polls well, I suspect we’ll be seeing much more from Point Blank.
