We checked out the new, 20+ seat patio at the aptly named Shelter restaurant on a recent trip to Tofino. It’s a surreal spread, especially in any sort of inclement weather (when its value is as plain as day). Rain or shine, it’s kept warm by a battery of heaters attached to the canopy’s wooden lattice. The trio of raised booths bring diners closer to the heaters, and though one side is open to the vagaries of the wind, the whole of it still feels enough like a patio to be enjoyed like a patio. Also, where guest are most exposed, there is a gas fire hearth for added warmth. All that and a comfort food blitz (love that panko-parmesan encrusted chicken burger) made for a cozy retreat.
