The Delicious Things A Chinatown Barman Hungers For At The End Of The Night

TOP FIVE is a new column that asks Vancouverites to weigh in with their favourite things within a narrow category. We started with Steve Da Cruz, co-owner of The Parker, and continue today with Keenan Hood, manager at The Keefer Bar. We asked him to name the Top Five restaurant dishes that he’d want to have delivered to him when he’s exhausted, hungry, and doing his cash-out at the end of a Saturday night…

1. The waffles at Cafe Medina with the white chocolate pistachio topping.

2. This was a toss up between Phnom Penh‘s chicken wings or the chicken and gravy at Mamie Taylor’s, but I just can’t live without the skin from Mamie’s chicken! I told [chef] Tobias [Grignon] that if he just sold the skin with the gravy he would have a daily customer from me.

3. The jerk chicken poutine from Calabash. Rich, dirty, and delicious; just the way I like it!

4. A prosciutto sandwich from La Galleria in Edgemont Village, or really any sandwich from this shop. These guys have a line-up out the door and sell out of their sandwiches every day.

5. Finally, I have to mention the tuna tempura from The Eatery. I’ll never get sick of it!

And an honourable mention and to pay homage to my personal favourite, I’m going to show my true trailer park colours: baked beans and fried kolbasaga with sautéed peppers and onions, plus a side of bread and butter, all served up in my kitchen.
