Exploring Trout & Co. – Hive Of Creativity On Commercial St.

15972419645_191d1be603_k

Located on Commercial Street in East Van (a stones throw from Trout Lake), Trout & Co. is part studio, part workshop, and part storefront showcasing a thoughtful collection of handmade items. Owners Hannah Newton and Emilie Crewe are both artists.

On their website, they explain how they believe in “exquisite craftsmanship, product diversity, and the pursuit of creativity”. That a belief is immediately evident when you walk through the doors. In addition to Hannah’s HJN Leather Craft Co. bags, clutches and wallets, and Emilie’s adorably austere drawings, cards and paintings, Trout & Co. carries a solid selection of other locally made goods.

The lineup is top notch: knit wear by Hendrik Lou, jewellery by Tofino’s Heavy Meadow and Vancouver designers RISH and Melanie Hull, beautiful waxed cotton textiles by Glasnost (love the pant aprons!), stunning pyramid candles from Wasted Effort (each comes with a crystal embedded inside), and hand carved wooden spoons by Dominic Tweed.

If you’re not yet sold by the “buy local” movement, Trout & Co. builds a solid case to convert you. Stop in to take a look for yourself Tuesday through Sunday, 10am-7pm.
