All Of The Awesome Sounds That You Should Be Listening To Right Now

Screen-Shot-2014-09-22-at-11.11

by Nic Bragg | From Kitsilano’s Zulu Records, we once again present our monthly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, you’ll find The Track – the song on heavy rotation in the shop this week; The Playlist – our selection of videos; The Gig – the “must-see show”; and The Glance – which details the best gigs on the immediate horizon. From our ears to yours, enjoy…

THE TRACK

METRONOMY Month of Sundays

Combining the brutalist architecture of London’s Barbican with the dizzy mind play of M.C. Escher and the trippy electro pop of UK’s Metronomy, this puzzling video works on a number of levels. You have to hand to filmmaker Callum Cooper for just choosing a simple idea and running with it. Dressing the band in identical clothes certainly adds to the confusing visuals. Metronomy are a quintessential arty pop band. Of late they have been serving up a steady stream of remixes and covers and clearly know how to standout in a crowd. This new track from March’s ‘Love Letters’ release is sort of a sleeper – watch the video a few times (if you can!) and it will grow on you.

THE PLAYLIST

THE REPLACEMENTS Alex Chilton

This is a heroic moment on many levels. The Replacements and Paul Westerberg are finally returning to play live shows and in doing so also cranking Alex Chilton (R.I.P.) live on Fallon is a nice homage to a guy who always was a thorn in the business’ side and never really got his due. They sound pretty wreckless too…

TY SEGALL Manipulator

Mr. Segall has amassed an impressive catalogue of releases that – when taken as a whole – surely vaults him up as one of the premiere rockers going today. Stealing a page from fellow guitar guru J. Mascis, Ty plays all the instruments on this album and thus allows himself to fully manifest his post-psyche fuzz vibes perfectly. Manipulator is a record you will hear everywhere.

FKA TWIGS Stay With Me

The guys over at Beggar’s Banquet are pumped that London-based modern soul experimentalist FKA Twigs is garnishing high critical praise. She just got announced as a finalist for England’s Mercury Music Award, and has been selling out shows on either side of the pond. Here she drops a droney version of Sam Smith’s well known crooner tune, Stay With Me. If you dig Darkside, James Blake and any number of modern r’n’b singers, then Twigs is your bag.

MAC DEMARCO This Guy Is In Love With You

Mac is up for Canada’s most prestigious music award – the Polaris Prize. There is a good chance he will win, but now that I type that, I realize no one I thought would win has ever won. Shot in location in New York City, this Burt Bacharach cover is actually an ode to Mac’s new guitar player, Andy, who deserves his own award for that moustache.

MICHAEL FEURERSTACK Scorekeeper

If you’ve wandered through the back-woods bars of Canada, chances are you’ve stumbled upon one of our nation’s best kept musical secrets, Michael Feurerstack. Michael has an impressive list of projects that he has assisted on as well as an even more impressive list of fellow collaborators on his new release Tambourine Death Bed. An all-around nice guy, and a deadly guitarist — discover him now!

THE WOODEN SKY Baby Hold On

Here are some more nice guys. Maybe you were fortunate enough to attend our acapella instore with Toronto’s Wooden Sky, but if not you may get a second chance (stay tuned). For now, enjoy this sweet lo-fi stripped down version of Baby Hold On!

THE GIG

THURSTON MOORE Friday October 3rd BILTMORE CABARET

Ex-Sonic Youth (get over it, folks) Thurston Moore will be in town early in October ahead of the release of his new LP ‘The Best Day’. Described as a record that showcases Moore’s willingness to take his sound all over the map, this new batch of songs draws upon a ‘cavalcade of disciplines ranging from free improvisation to acoustic composition to black/white metal/noise disruption’, while focusing on the freedom rock energy of Crazy Horse. Seeing Thurston live is always a sonic adventure and a small club like The Biltmore should make for some up close experimental guitar voyeurism. Bonus: the openers are Sebadoh! A deeper look at upcoming gigs below…
