The GOODS from The Acorn

Vancouver, BC | The Acorn Artist Series shines a light on artists in Vancouver whose work we admire greatly and wish to proliferate in our own humble way. Each month we make a new artist postcard that gets handed out to our guests who are free to frame it, mail it, or fold it into an airplane and surprise their neighbour. This month, we’re featuring Shelley Penfold, a painter living and working in Vancouver, BC who completed a BFA at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003 and an MFA at the University of Victoria in 2009. Her work has been shown across Canada and resides in private and public collections. The launch party will be this coming Thursday, May 29th from 10pm to 1am featuring DJ Josh Wells (Black Mountain, Lightning Dust, Destroyer), $4 pints, and $6 cocktail specials. Read a quick Q&A with the artist after the jump…

What’s the best place in Vancouver to see the art you want to see? The Flats.

What neighbourhood do you live and/or work in and why? I currently have a home studio which is actually a small space in my apartment and the patio space outside. Surprisingly it works with my process which incorporates experimentation and chance as well as contemplative planned out moves. I live with the work and it slowly reveals what it needs. I can sit and look at it propped up again the wall for days before I figure out what the next move will be. I have lived in the South Granville area for years and it has a few cool spots…Heirloom restaurant has the best brunches! I used to pass by the Equinox and Monte Clark galleries daily but they have moved due to the high Granville street rents. So, to see shows does require more travel these days.

Name an artist whose work has inspired you in the past six months? Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, an American painter who makes wonderfully abject paintings.
