Penticton, BC | Summer in Penticton. There is nothing like it. Dry, hot days. Splashing around in one of the two freshwater lakes that surround Penticton. Floating down the channel that connects Okanagan Lake with Skaha Lake. Hanging out with friends on a patio overlooking the lake under the bright blue sky. Another time-honoured tradition in Penticton is exploring the Skaha Bluffs. Whether rock climbing, cliff jumping, hiking, birding, photographing nature or simply admiring the beauty, the Skaha Bluffs are a site worth visiting again and again.

To pay tribute to the world-famous Skaha Bluffs, Penticton-based micro-brewery Cannery Brewing has launched a new beer called Skaha Summer Ale. It’s a blond ale that is a refreshing, thirst quenching beer perfect for a hot summer day. Cannery Brewing’s Head Brewer Ross Thompson explains, “Our brewing team was eager to create something new this year for our summer seasonal. We wanted to create something unique and different. This is light and summery, but it’s also a beer drinker’s beer. It’s well balanced, flavourful and complex. We added white wheat malt and German Ale yeast to create a body that is soft and delicate with a crisp, dry finish.”

Thompson continued, “Craft beer lovers and those new to the world of small-batch, hand-crafted, micro-brewed beers will love this beer on a hot day enjoying the sunshine. It’s great served alone and it also pairs beautifully with summer salads, grilled veggies and BBQ meats.”

The other thing that is unique about the Skaha Summer Ale is that its flavour profile will change each summer. Thompson explained, “Each year, the base grain recipe will stay the same, but we’ll change the hops to give each vintage a distinct flavour and aroma. Our 2014 Skaha Summer Ale was brewed using the Australian hops Topaz and Ella. We are looking forward to trying out new hop configurations each year.”

Skaha Summer Ale will be available in 650ml bottles at Government and private liquor stores throughout BC and Alberta as well as on tap at select restaurants, pubs and golf courses. Whether you live in the Okanagan, vacation in Penticton regularly or hope to visit someday, may Skaha Summer Ale help you create and relive special summer memories.

THE PEOPLE

Owners: Patt and Ron Dyck
Brew Team: A passionate group of beer crazy souls.

ABOUT CANNERY BREWING

Located amidst the breath taking scenery of Penticton, British Columbia, our micro-brewery produces individually hand-crafted fine ales and lagers of unmistakable complexity and balance.  This flavour is the result of wonderful combinations of premium quality malted grains and carefully chosen Pacific Northwest hops. Cannery Brewing is the Small Brewery with Big Flavour!

All of our beers are created with carefully selected and scrutinized ingredients.  We use the finest hops and malted barleys and only the finest yeast strains.  Our brews are all natural.  They contain no preservatives and are not pasteurized.  You get a fresh, crisp taste every time.

We brewed our first batch of beer in the Old Aylmer Fruit and Vegetable Cannery in Penticton on April Fool’s Day, 2001.  It did seem like an auspicious day for the start of a brewery that would be dedicated to enjoyment (not to mention the odd practical joke!). In the beginning, we brewed and sold beer in kegs for local restaurants, pubs and clubs.  After that came the wonderful 8.5 litre Party Pigs of beer that flew out our doors. (Our pigs do fly!)

In 2011, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and our 1000th brew! Today we sell our beers in 650ml bottles, 355ml cans, on tap, in Party Pigs and we recently launched a new Growler program. A Growler is a reusable, glass 2L bottle that can be filled at our brewery.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

Over the years, we have been fortunate to receive a number of different awards at various beer festivals throughout the country. We were thrilled when we won a Gold Medal for our Squire Scotch Ale and a Silver Medal for our Naramata Nut Brown Ale as part of the 2010 Canadian Brewing Awards.
