The GOODS from Ocean Wise

Vancouver, BC | Overfishing is the biggest threat our ocean’s face today. At this critical point, we are now fishing the last 10 per cent of the oceans’ large, predatory fish. The good news is that there is still time to take action to save our oceans. November is Ocean Wise month – an ideal time to remind ourselves to choose sustainable seafood options all year round. Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program is a national sustainable seafood initiative that works to educate consumers on the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. The program also works with restaurant, market, supplier and producer partners to provide sustainable Ocean Wise seafood options to consumers. There are many ways that you can join the sustainable seafood movement – not only during Ocean Wise month, but every day.

• Look for the Ocean Wise symbol anywhere you choose to enjoy seafood for Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice.

• Download the Ocean Wise iPhone app for sustainable seafood options and information on the go.

• Ask your local restaurants, markets, and suppliers to consider joining the Ocean Wise program, if they haven’t already, to provide consumers with ocean-friendly seafood options.

• Savour delicious sustainable seafood chowders and beers at this year’s Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown. Although the Vancouver event is sold out, tickets are still available for Calgary’s event on Nov. 18 and Toronto’s event on Nov. 19 at vanaqua.org/chowdown.

• Participate in events or initiatives held by committed Ocean Wise partners that are working to raise awareness this month of the issues surrounding overfishing – see below for the month’s remaining events:

BRITISH COLUMBIA

• Rocky Mountain Flatbread will be featuring Ocean Wise dishes for its pasta and flatbread each week throughout November. These features will include various sustainable Ocean Wise choices such as wild salmon, Qualicum scallops, prawns and more.

Vancouver:

• November 21 – Choices hosts Sustainable Seafood Eating with Chef Antonio Cerullo.

ONTARIO

• Daily Seafood will be featuring Ocean Wise Selva Shrimp and Spanish Mackerel throughout November.

• Seacore Seafood will be featuring closed-system raised Ocean Wise salmon from the Freshwater Institute from November 11 – November 30.

Oakville:

• November 9 – Organic Garage hosts in-store Ocean Wise event

Toronto:

• November 1 – 30 – Fishbar Restaurant holds BYOW on Wednesdays in support of Ocean Wise

• November 7 & 21 – Evergreen Brickworks and The Chef’s House at George Brown College host Hands-on Cooking Ocean Wise classes

The Ocean Wise symbol next to a menu or seafood item is the Vancouver Aquarium’s assurance of an ocean-friendly seafood choice. With over 3,100 Ocean Wise partner locations across Canada, Ocean Wise makes it easy for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.
