The GOODS from Cavalier

Vancouver, BC | Morgan Carrier and Shira Laye are the couple behind the LACAR label. Shira studied jewellery in NYC in 2007 and has since been producing work out of Vancouver. Shira’s motto for her jewellery has always been “my jewellery will make you cry”, but what was really making her cry was supplying the demand for her personal collection. So, she did the most logical thing…recruited her boyfriend Morgan – a theatre and film designer and soon-to-be, in-studio labourer. After more than a year of sanding and polishing his fingers to the bone, Morgan began contributing his creative input to the designs. The couple decided to team up. LACAR–a mixing of their surnames–was born. LACAR draws inspiration from modern design with a look to the great jewelry eras of the past. From the dark side of Victorian mourning jewellery to the architectural shapes of art deco, LACAR upholds fine jewellery traditions infused with wearable street style, creating piece so desirable your boyfriend will be jealous. Learn more about the collection and the charity Shira and Morgan have chosen to support after the jump…

About the collection | “Oculus is an expression of the beauty of eroded sanctuary. We wanted our pieces to be monumental, worthy of worship, but we wanted them to be light and wearable. So, we came up with the aesthetic of the gothic archway. The arches create a heavy vaulted lacework drawing inspiration from sacred architectures. The beauty of the collection lies in its minimalism of shape juxtaposed with its complex and imperfect pattern. Price point ranges from $80-$1000 with pieces mostly in silver, bronze and gold. We also use black jade, black diamonds, sapphires and spinels throughout the collection.”

This month LACAR will be debuting their men’s collection. “We started making rings for Morgan to wear, as up until then our line was mostly geared towards women, and he felt like he should be wearing more LACAR to promote our brand. Before we knew it, men were taking notice of our small ring collection and asking if we sold them. It was then that we decided to launch a men’s line. We wanted to create a mini line that had an androgynous appeal. The pieces are heavy and solid, very much in opposition to the hollow arched pattern found throughout our debut Lacar collection Oculus. Pieces are made in silver, gold and black jade and range from $200-$2000.”

Charity | As part of Cavalier’s initiative to support the community, 5% from each piece sold goes towards a charity that the designers themselves have selected. Shira and Morgan have chosen to support the Scleroderma Association of BC. “Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that has affected our lives through someone we love.”

About Cavalier

cavalier-2

As owners with significant connections to the local music industry, Dane and Keith enjoy using a musical analogy when describing the variety of their collection. If equated to a radio station, Cavalier would be playing everything from underground hip-hop to classic rock to the latest indie buzz band. Because they have the ability to accommodate any design imaginable, each customer will either find or create a piece suited to their own unique tastes. To that end, Cavalier has partnered with their highly regarded local designers to create collections exclusive to Cavalier.

A highlight of this collaboration is a gentleman’s collection suited to the tastes of a demographic often left on the periphery of the jewellery industry. Eminently appealing to both men and the women who shop for them, this collaboration features items such as Sterling Silver flasks, combs, and tie clips. Such pieces, stylish and enduring in nature, also make for ideal gifts of appreciation from groom to groomsman.

Owing largely to such variety, we are confident you will enjoy a buying experience different than that offered by any jewellery retailer in Canada. Although the purchase of a piece of jewellery can, quite literally, be a once in a lifetime investment, your experience at Cavalier will eschew the feelings of anxiety typically associated with such purchases and instead encourage the feelings of comfort associated with more traditional purchases.
