SCOUT LIST: 10 Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now & Next Week

scoutlist

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. You can also check it out in the Globe & Mail, from our calendar to yours…

YOGA | Where do you practice yoga? Vancouver has it’s share (and then some) of yoga studios outfitted with everything from lavender-scented candles and sound-proofed walls to dimmed lights and heated floors, but how many of them boast beluga whales? This Tuesday night the Vancouver Aquarium is offering a Hatha Yoga class in the Aquarium’s Arctic Gallery. Unwind, stretch and breath while you watch whales glide gracefully through clear icy water. Now that’s atmosphere!
Tue, Oct. 15 | 5:30pm | Vancouver Aquarium (845 Avison Way), Stanley Park | $31 | DETAILS

LAUGH | Say Wha?! (Readings of Deliciously Rotten Writing) goes down Wednesday night. If you’re not familiar with it, Say Wha?! is a comedy show wherein performers put their spin on some of the most cringe-worthy, embarrassing and painfully earnest writing ever found in print. You might hear passages from romance novels, diaries, even office memos – all of it embarrassingly horrible. Bad writing is everywhere, so you might as well laugh at it! From event organizer Sarah Bynoe: “Have you ever read a poorly written novel and thought to yourself, who publishes this crap? Or come across a hilariously out of date self-help book in a thrift store? Perhaps you flipped through Sarah Palin’s autobiography and guffawed at her life story. Well, that’s what Say Wha?! is all about.” Hustle over to The Cottage Bistro on Main Street and settle in for a night of mirth.
Wed, Oct. 16 | 8-10pm | Cottage Bistro (4468 Main Street) | $10  | DETAILS

SHOP HOP | The Gastown Fall Shop Hop happens this Thursday night. The one-night-only event offers Vancouverites the opportunity to cruise fifty-four of Gastown’s best shops, check out all of the new Fall wares, and be treated to great deals, in-store specials and the occasional treat (read: glass of champagne). And get this: the kind people of Gastown want to make sure that you don’t get tired out by the trying on of clothing and the carrying of bags so, with every purchase you make, you’ll receive a food or drink voucher to one of your favourite nearby participating restaurants (in order to keep you energy levels up with good food and drink). Even if you’re not looking to spend, the vibe is good and the business owners are friendly. So get hopping.

JAPANDROIDS | Vancouver’s own Japandroids are playing a home gig at the Biltmore on Thursday night. There really isn’t much more to say except that if you’re planning to score tickets, move fast!

RAMEN BURGERS | Looking for something a little different for Friday night dinner? How about a Ramen Burger? What the hell is a ramen burger, you ask? It’s a big patty of beef served in a “bun” made of ramen noodles. In addition to the ramen burger (which we’re still trying to get our heads around), the evening will also feature Storm Brewing’s Root Beer Stout, ice cream from Brown Paper Packages Ice Cream “Adult Sundae Bar”, and music by Chapel Sound. Though walk-ins are ok (expect line-ups), they’re encouraging the curious to book their burgers in advance because they sold out pretty quickly the last time around.
Fri, Oct. 18 | 6-11pm | 870 E Cordova St. | DETAILS

FILM | Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice! Catch the midnight movie at the Rio Theatre this Friday night. Extra points for film-related costumes, so dig out that black and white striped suit, pick up a beer from the theatre bar and slide into one of those comfy velvet seats for an evening of Tim Burton magic starring Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton. “Let’s turn on the juice and see what shakes loose!”
Fri, Oct. 18 | 11pm | Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway) | $8/$6 | DETAILS

EASTSIDE FLEA | Somewhere between a boutique vintage pop-up and a garage sale, a well executed flea market offers thrifty treasure hunters the chance to score unique goods at reasonable prices. If the key components are good selection, low prices and a mix of old and new, then The Eastside Flea at the WISE Hall is a homerun. Find out for yourself this Saturday. Expect found, salvaged and reclaimed goods, vintage clothing and vinyl, hand made soaps, jewellery and accessories as well as some kick-ass baked goods (East Village Bakery will be there), treats from The Prophouse Cafe and some Varincey Pakoras. Being that we are now closing in on Halloween, organisers are encouraging attendees to come looking for unique costumes and spooky decorations. Interested in finding out even more? Check out their brand new website!
Sat, Oct. 19 | 10am | The Wise Hall (1882 Adanac St) | Free | DETAILS

ARCHITECTURE | The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is offering a tour of lane way homes this weekend. With a view to expose laneway housing as a clever solution to “Densification without Demolition”, VHF has arranged a series of homes to be opened to the public.  From VHF “The laneway house has become incredibly popular in Vancouver, with over 1000 permits approved since 2008. Recently the City announced several new incentives and changes to zoning to increase their viability including fast tracking for single-story lanehomes. From income producing rentals to a way to keep family close in an increasingly expensive city, the laneway house has become an appealing option for many families.” Take a peek inside 7 unique homes and be inspired by design and innovation that demonstrate that increased density can be smart, stylish and comfortable by making good use of underused land on existing lots.

APPLE FESTIVAL | This fall festival is educational, delicious and inexpensive. Wander the UBC Botanical Gardens, take in live musical performance, visit tasting tents to sample up more varieties of new and heritage apples than you ever knew existed (like over 60). There’ll also be Master Gardeners available to discuss apple-related diseases and pest management for those of you who have trees at home. And if you see those people who have trees and are getting free expert advice but you’re jealous because you don’t have a tree, don’t fret. You can also buy many varieties of apple trees to plant in your own garden. But the best, most stupendous part? No end of apple pie, hot apple cider, caramel apples, apple chips and organic BC apple juice!
