The GOODS from Cavalier

Vancouver, BC | Each month at Cavalier, we do a feature on one of our artists. This month it’s Karen La of Broken Promises. Broken Promises is the trading name under which artist La exhibits her works of handcrafted jewelry. Constructed in her workshop in Vancouver, each piece is created in an atmosphere of deliberate design and delicate preparation. Made of sterling silver, they are uniquely products of her personal handicraft.

Taking inspiration from minimal art and 90’s nostalgia, Broken Promises’ collection sees Karen La navigating her designs through the use of primary forms, linear lines and familiar symbols. Working within this visual language, these limitations have constructed a series of modern, expressive, yet entirely wearable pieces of jewelry.

Broken Promises new collection, entitled Irregular Polygons, continues in Karen’s exploration into the visual language of shapes and their relationship to the human body. Through the use of lines and angles each piece in the collection is reduced to its most essential form. The result is a series of clean, expressive and entirely wearable pieces of modern jewelry.

As part of Cavalier’s initiative to support the community, 5% from each piece sold goes towards a charity that they themselves have selected. The charity that Karen supports is the DAREarts foundation for children. DAREarts is a Canadian charitable organization that uses educational experiences in the arts to empower children and youth facing life challenges, with confidence, courage and leadership skills to unlock their potential and ignite change in their lives and communities.Learn more after the jump…

“I grew up in Vancouver and went to east side public schools my entire childhood,” Karen says. “I wish when I was 12 there was a program like DAREarts that exposed youth to a professional level of performing and visual arts and allowed us to partake in the production of it. I’ve chosen this non-profit as my organization because I would like as many young adolescents as possible to have opportunities like this.
