by Andrew Morrison | The next cool thing is the Marine Building. Located at 355 Burrard Street in the heart of downtown, the 1930 Marine Building is an Art Deco jewel box that is an absolute wonder to explore. The attention to detail astounds. The floors elaborately depict the signs of the zodiac and inside the ornate, brass-doored elevators you’ll find 12 different types of inlaid hardwood. There’s just so much to see on the inside and out (even the main doors and door frames are stunning). Originally, the public used to be able to check out the observation deck, but the Great Depression – when folks couldn’t afford the 25 cent entry fee – put paid to that. Today, to reach and tour the penthouse, one must align with a local heritage group for a tour. If that opportunity proves elusive, just press through the stunning revolving doors and have a jaw-dropping peek. It’s our favourite city landmark for good reason, and a 22 floor aesthetic counterpoint to the ho-hum high-rises of Coal Harbour and Yaletown.
