TEA & TWO SLICES: On Interpretive Riots And Hysteria Soaring To Silly New Heights

by Sean Orr | Wherein a third protest protests the original protests’ right to protest. Anti-gentrification ‘bullying’ must stop, group says. And yet if people are still ignorant of the causes and consequences of gentrification – or, as the passerby in the video delightfully mispronounces, genderfication – then the protests at least serve to try and educate people. My point all along has been that the term itself is subject to nuance and contextual interpretation. Holding a sign that says “down with gentrification” is not unlike holding one that reads “down with economy”. What kind of economy? What kind of gentrification? But anyway…

Downtown Abbotsford housing-for-homeless proposal hitting roadblocks. “It’s unfortunate some people are homeless, my heart goes out to them, but it’s not really my responsibility. I’m not ruthless, not at all. It’s not that I don’t care, but I care more about my business”. Putting aside the rampant, free-market, Social Darwinism for a second, how exactly would getting homeless people off the streets hurt your business? Mad Dog? More like Sad, confused, puppy.

Speaking of free-market ideologues, The Fraser Institute’s Fazil Mihlar is leaving his ivory perch at the shining tower of media conglomeration known as 200 Granville. Related: Death by a Thousand Buyouts.

That won’t stop Post Media from running these ‘capitalism at any cost’ editorials: Vision’s hysteria soars to silly new heights. Actually…yeah, that’s pretty silly.

Not as silly as this, though: Vive la Robertson revolution. Satire done badly is worse than the people who actually resent the Mayor for putting in bike lanes. Stephen Quinn is the worst.

Mayor Gregor Robertson says he can’t imagine seeking a Liberal nomination in Vancouver Quadra. Maybe he’s holding out for a sweet gig in the Senate instead.

When it bleeds, it leads. If it doesn’t bleed, just make it up: Footage of Vancouver Stanley Cup riot passed off as anger in the streets after acquittal in Trayvon Martin case. Obviously the most disturbing thing about this is that Americans were so willing to believe that blacks were rioting that they were willing to look past the complete lack of black people rioting. Oh, and the mountains.

Local comedian Dave Shumka talks about the very unfunny aspects of being shot at.
