by Robyn Yager | The Seattle Art Museum is holding Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion this summer. This exhibition – curated by Akiko Fukai (director of the Kyoto Costume Institute) – is an exploration into how Japanese fashion designers have revolutionized and shaped the way we understand fashion today. “With eighty gowns, ranging from classic and elegant to outrageous—created by celebrated designers Issey Miyake, Kenzo Takada, Rei Kawakubu, Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe, Jun Takahashi and others—videos of runway shows, artist photographs, magazines, and ephemera designed by renowned international artists such as Gilbert & George and Cindy Sherman, an exhilarating experience awaits viewers of this extraordinary exhibition.” (via SAM). It’s lucky for us that this exhibition is just south of the border. It runs through to September 8th, so get on it while the summer’s still hot.

  1. So cool. I bought my first Issey Miyake piece in Tokyo in the late spring of 1982. It’s long gone but I still have Yoshi Yamamoto coats from the early 90’s that still look fine today.
