by Sean Orr | Post Media? More like Post Hoc Media: Eco-scaremongering fuels pipeline phobia. Count the logical fallacies in this Jon Ferry column… “I’ve wondered why they engender such hatred” (appeal to emotion); “Canadians have been building natural-gas and oil pipelines since the mid-1850s” (that one is called argumentum ad antiquitatem); “This puts the Merritt spill of two barrels of light crude into perspective” (Yeah? To really put things into perspective, I shall now dump two barrels of crude oil into Jon Ferry’s morning coffee); “Even sleeping, after all, involves some risk” (classic Red Herring); and finally, ad hominem: With your attitude, I’m surprised you have any (friends).
It’s not about the amount of oil spilled – or so the soft argument goes – it’s about an industry that has failed to win over the confidence of the majority through a series of accidents. Hmm, let’s just see if I can find an example…Alberta Faces New Major Spill. That took all of about 1.8 seconds.
More spectacularly class-based xenophobia from Hush Magazine: WTF Vancouver – Traumatic transit edition. I’ll leave this one to Chi Pig of SNFU:
There’s a man to my left
Who’s got a stump for a hand
I’m staring into a giant cyst
Growing on the face of a Chinese man
Reality is a ride on the bus
Mayors these days: Montreal mayor faces 14 charges including conspiracy, fraud. But yeah, our mayor is awful because he put in some bike lanes.
Only in Vancouver: Strip Club Adopts Locally-Sourced Menu, Doubles Sales. Brings new meaning to the phrase ‘local talent’.
After blowing up on twitter, Mohinder finally breaks the mainstream: More than 100 East Vancouver properties targeted by viral “Mohinder” tag. Before there was Mohinder there was Alex G.
Best name in the news today: Rikter Pop. Abbotsford homeless man rescued from fire.
