TEA & TWO SLICES: On Raising Glasses To Relaxed Liquor Laws And DJs Named Drex

January 2, 2013.

by Sean OrrMILF or cougar: A premier shouldn’t have to choose, so why did she do so publicly on the radio? “Boldt said some criticism should be directed toward the radio host as she doubts a male premier would ever have been put in a similar position”. I see this instead as another failure of her ad-hoc populist approach to government (the same style that has already alienated so many members of her own party). She just doesn’t get it. I mean, who would ever agree to be interviewed by a disc jockey named Drex? And who wouldn’t expect the guy to behave exactly like you’d imagine a guy named Drex to behave?

And yet: Prediction for 2013: the B.C. Liberals will not be destroyed. Fine, but can we hope for ‘seriously mauled’ instead.

Tiresome right-wing shibboleth: Christie Blatchford: Inevitable puffery and horse manure surrounds hunger strike while real Aboriginal problems forgotten. Inevitable puffery? What does that even mean? Scalping is frowned upon these days, right?

But don’t take my word for it (that’s a Reading Rainbow reference, btw), listen to Harsha. Or better still, read this post on Native Writes Now (brilliant blog name): “What Christie Blatchford wrote is offensive to the highest degree; but it should be remembered as the most honest interpretation in a national journal of the ultimate goal of the last 150 years of cultural genocide”. Yup. Give them enough rope and they’ll hang themselves (so sorry for that unfortunate metaphor).

Congressional con: How Harper exploits Canadians’ ignorance of parliamentary democracy. “I thought we were living in an autonomous collective”. “You’re fooling yourself, we’re living in a dictatorship” (that’s only the 22nd time I have referenced the Constitutional Peasant).

Guest column: In the age of rage, something’s got to give. “We throw coffee cups. We curse. We stomp our feet. We pull long faces”. We write columns on Scout Magazine, we sing in a hardcore band as cathartic release… No, but seriously, a healthy culture is one that embraces some healthy self-reflected cynicism and realizes that the odd outburst isn’t to be met with guns or fisticuffs, but with humility. Or, “I’d rather be pissed off than pissed on”.

Early contender for headline of the year 2013: Bulletproof gear for kids.

Meanwhile, Canada quietly loosens limits on assault-weapon exports to Colombia. Oh cool! Are we going to have our very own Ollie North scandal, too?

Roll out the barrel: Liquor law year in review: Was 2012 Year Zero for reform? I’ll drink to that. No really, I’m about to go and drink to that.

Told you so: Infectious norovirus forces quarantine of two wards at Metro Vancouver hospital. I know a certain restaurant that had it a couple of weeks ago, but I’m not allowed to say.

We got him: Surrey, B.C., man, 63, charged with slashing 480 SkyTrain seats. I am fascinated with this.

And in other micro-news: Vancouver woman steals her own bike.
