TEA & TWO SLICES: On Canada As A Back-Up Plan & The States As A Foreign Country

by Sean Orr | The Others: At a Loss? There’s Always Canada. The idea that Canada is some sort of Plan B is reprehensible. We have been entirely less democratic from the very beginning of our Dominion. We are still technically a bloody monarchy for Christ’s sake; we don’t even elect our head of state! And although the article notes thusly: “Rather than a leftist sanctuary, Canada has recently swung to the right”, the idea that we are some sort of minor league team waiting for an influx of players from the Big Leagues is just patronizing.

Pete McMartin: True or false — America is a foreign country. That’s equally patronizing. “Their politics are ugly? Yes, but at least they’re full of vigour. You can’t say the same about ours.” Oh, so unabashed bigotry, fear, voter manipulation, attack ads, and 7 hour voting line-ups are a good thing now? Great.

Conservative Hinterland Who’s Who: The Rob Anders. Incidentally, this slug comes from the province with the worst wealth disparity in the country.

The myth of small government: RCMP ships Harper’s armoured Cadillac to India. A PMO spokesman was not overheard saying “The costs are justified when you consider the sheer number of scary brown people in this country”.

Leading to the Tweet of the day c/o Scott Feschuk: “John Baird gave a speech last night that was funny in the same way that hepatitis is funny which is not at all”.

Adrian Dix is not the politician he used to be. This article is about as interesting as any could be that starts with “It’s raining outside and the view from the ninth floor of the Guinness Tower on West Hastings Street is one of shifting cloud patterns”.

Meanwhile, Christy Clark is the politician she used to be: Christy Clark unveils plan to boost tourism industry by $18 billion. It’s all about branding, branding, branding.

I guess it’s a good thing since B.C.’s status as same sex wedding destination might go to pot. Regardless of the results, it’s still a question.

The best little whorehouse in Texas Kerrisdale: Alleged brothel in Kerrisdale says in lawsuit that it was denied city permission to operate because of nimbys. “This house is a very, very, very fine house”- Reverend Lovejoy.

“The suit claims the evidence consisted of unsubstantiated allegations by “NIMBYs” worried about their upscale neighbourhood who claimed that there must be “illegal activities of a sexual nature taking place” because the business is filled with “these black haired Asians who can’t speak English.”

Just wow, Kerrisdale.

Meanwhile, Homeless shelter set for Seymour Street riles neighbours. Of course it does. At this point I’d be outraged if some idiot wasn’t outraged.

Resident Advisor: Max Ulis helps Raise the Red Gate.
