SCOUT LIST: 10 Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now & Next Week

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

LAUGH | When was the last time you almost wet your pants laughing? I ask because local comedian Sara Bynoe is having another one of her delightful, pee-worthy Readings of Deliciously Rotten Writing on Wednesday and the focus will be one of the fastest-selling paperbacks of all time, Fifty Shades of Grey. Bynoe says she’ll concentrate on “the terrible writing, the ridiculous plot points, and the out of place British idioms that make these books so cringe-worthy.” And because of the book’s many naughty bits, this event is not recommended for the Maurice Sendak set. You might also reconsider taking grandma.
Wednesday, November 7 | 8-10pm | Cottage Bistro (4470 Main St) | $5-10 at the door | DETAILS

LEARN | Peter Ladner, author of The Urban Food Revolution: Changing The Way We Feed Cities, is at Van Dusen Gardens this Thursday evening to talk about commercial micro-gardening, community composting, and the many practical ways in which local growers can process, store and distribute their bounty. Ladner, a former Vancouver city councillor and a big time local food advocate, is also compelling speaker whose enthusiasm for building a better, more stable food city is infectious.
Thursday, November 8 | 7:30pm | VanDusen Botanical Gardens (5251 Oak St.) | $15 | DETAILS

POUNCE | FUSE is returning to the Vancouver Art Gallery this Friday evening. If you’ve never been before, imagine live music, dancers, and the extremely rare opportunity to appreciate art in a public gallery late at night with a glass of wine in hand without being tackled by security guards. A fair start to the weekend, to be sure, and rather timely seeing as the new Ian Wallace exhibit just went up. This is the event of the week, folks. We’ll see you there.
Friday, November 9 | 8pm – 1am | Vancouver Art Gallery | $17.50 | DETAILS

GET DEBAUCHED | Be wary, food and wine lovers. Whistler’s highly anticipated Cornucopia – arguably BC’s most decadently consumptive weekend – is on the immediate horizon. That means wine seminars, multi-course winemaker’s dinners, huge tasting events, and after-parties of a magnitude seldom seen in the province. While some events are free, most are ticketed. Worthwhile tickets always have an annoying habit of selling out, so book yours on the quick and cancel whatever plans you made to rake the leaves. Don’t forget to pack your warmest toque and a bottle of Advil.
Now through Sunday, November 11 | Various locations throughout Whistler | DETAILS

GET DRESSED | This weekend is your chance to score curated vintage clothing, accessories and antiques from Hey Jude, a winter pop-up in Chinatown. Owners Lauren Clark and Lyndsey Chow really know what they are doing; their selection is good, their prices are fair and their sense of style is bang on. Expect cold weather luxuries like velvet, fur, and leather among the silk and sequins. And you never know, it could be where your slinky holiday cocktail dress has been hiding out. The cash only pop up runs Friday through Monday with a bit of a launch party on Friday night (7-10pm with music, wine, and beer). See you there!
434 Columbia St. | Fri, Nov. 9, 12-6pm (opening party: 7-10) | 10th-12th, 11-7pm | DETAILS

SNOOP | If you dig yourself some Snoop Dogg (Lion), head over to The Fall Tattooing & Artist’s gallery this weekend to see the Doggfather in dozens of ways (except in person). Perplexed? From the playful creators of the hugely successful Steven Seagallery, Bill You Murray Me?, and Zig-a-Zigallery shows comes Drop It Like It’s Art, the pimpest art show to ever hit Vancouver. Think walls lined with Snoop-centric art and a gallery full of Snoop fans. A boring evening it will not be.
Friday, November 9 (opening night) | 644 Seymour St. | 7pm until late | DETAILS

CRAFTY |  Tis the season of the craft fair, and that means community centres, church basements and school gyms will be filled with unique and handmade gifts produced by local artisans between now and Christmas. Two very different and wholly worthwhile fairs go down this weekend. Artisans from across the country will be at the Vancouver Convention Centre for Circle Craft while the much smaller Make It fair goes down at the Croatian Cultural Centre on Commercial Drive. The former will be huge (expect to lose yourself for hours) and chock-a-block with everything from jewellery to jam, while the latter – a much hipper, tightly curated affair – offers DJ’s, live music from emerging Vancouver bands, and – ahem – a fully licensed bar. According to Make It founder Jenna Herbut, the 140 artisans and designers at this fair “are pretty much rockstars, but instead of a guitar they are equipped with scissors and paintbrushes.” We couldn’t agree more.
Circle Craft: November 7-11 | Vancouver Convention Centre (1055 Canada Place)| $12 | DETAILS
Make It! : November 8-11 | Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Dr.) | $5 | DETAILS

VINYL | Nothing sounds like vinyl. It’s the difference between film and digital, ink and keystroke, a proper cup of coffee and the instant stuff. Vinyl has soul and depth, and it’s still thriving, making toes tap the world over. It’s just not as easy to find as an MP3. So head to the Main Street Vinyl Record Fair this weekend and throw yourself in wax’s deep end. On Saturday afternoon the The Cambrian Hall, just off of Main at 17th, will be swarming with vinyl lovers buying, selling or trading new and used records. You can talk old school stereo equipment, wear your old Clash shirt and marvel at the fact that there are still people out there who collect cassette tapes.
Saturday, November 10 | 11am-4pm | Cambrian Hall (215 E 17th) | $2 at the door | DETAILS

SUNSHINE! | If there’s sunshine this weekend (as promised by the weather people) drop everything and go to Iona Beach in Richmond (just north of the Vancouver International Airport). Walking its breakwater and raised boardwalks on the best days of Autumn is a cure for its worst days, and we’ve had some doozies of late. DETAILS

REMEMBER | Slow down and appreciate the gravity of your moment of silence this Remembrance Day. Services take place at numerous locations around town on Sunday morning, but the biggie will start around 10:30am at the Victory Square Cenotaph on the western edge of Gastown.
Sunday, November 11 | 10:30am | Victory Square Cenotaph (corner of Hastings St and Cambie St.)
