The GOODS from JoieFarm

Vancouver, BC | We are proud to announce the release of our 2010 Reserve Series including one new wine, the 2010 Reserve Pinot Noir, in addition to the 2010 Reserve Chardonnay and 2010 PTG. Our Reserve series is inspired by our love of the wines of Burgundy and our recognition that Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay excel in the Okanagan Valley. It is our stated goal to utilize our best lots in any given year to create small quantities of high quality wine, with an emphasis on low-yields, careful selection and traditional Old World methods. Please note that there will be no downtown Vancouver pickup option due to harvest but shipping is still free to most of Canada. Early reviews for each of the wines have been outstanding. You can read these and order the wines after the jump…

Out of the hundreds of Pinot Noirs entered from around the world, we finished third overall. Not bad for our first crack at it.

The inaugural Joie 2010 Reserve Pinot Noir is one of the best we’ve come across in recent years. It sports violet and some earthy hints on top, followed by a medium-bodied palate defined by supple and silky tannins, and strawberry, underpinned by a touch of savoury with juicy acidity.

This is an elegant Pinot Noir incorporating five different clones from two vineyards – one on the Naramata Bench and one on the Skaha Lake Bench. Just the deep hue alone gives the wine an alluring beauty in the glass. It has aromas of cherry and mocha, leading to flavours of spicy cherries. The wine has a svelte, silky texture

Another stellar vintage of Chardonnay from JoieFarm who each year release an amazingly consistent reserve-tier, robust, age-worthy wine, no matter what the growing season seems to throw their way. For 2010 the big, beautiful and enticing nose opens with a bouquet of tropical fruit, minerals, oak and leesy notes that have already developed nicely. On the dry palate that follows, balance between the ripe fruit, lean mineral notes, lively acid and the rich barrel characters is managed brilliantly created a Chardonnay with depth and intrigue: you want to taste more.

Also in the reserve line: a beautifully textured, quite leesy, less citrus more pear-toned Reserve Chardonnay 201, perfect with fresh corn chowder, bacon and sablefish.

2010 PTG | $24 | 843 cases produced

as well as the vibrant PTG 2010 (Passetoutgrain), a take on the traditional Burgundian Gamay and Pinot Noir blend, that balances well-managed tannins with ripe strawberry, dark berry and spicy notes underpinned by juicy acidity. Even better with duck confit.

This year’s PTG sees the Gamay Noir rise to 52% of the traditional Burgundian “Passe-Tout-Grains” blend with Pinot Noir. A welcomed rise which infuses more tangy and spicy red fruit on to the concentrated nose and lush palate. Aged in French oak for 10 months with only 15% new allowing the natural characters of the Pinot Noir and Gamay fruit to dominate the profile while contributing only secondary aromas and flavours of toasted oak. Supported by a nice backbone of mouth-watering, but not sharp, acid and fine, medium tannins.

PTG stands for Passe-Tout-Grains, which is what the Burgundians call blends of Pinot Noir and Gamay. This delicious Burgundy-inspired wine is 52% Gamay Noir, 48% Pinot Noir. The deep colour signals the rich but silky weight this had on the palate. It begins with aromas of cherries and pepper, leading to flavours of cherry, spice and pepper.

About JoieFarm

JoieFarm is owned and operated by Heidi Noble & Michael Dinn and is located on their farm on the beautiful Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley in the interior of British Columbia. JoieFarm is interested exclusively in the grape varieties of Alsace, Burgundy and Champagne which excel in the cool-climate, desert landscape of the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. We are particularly interested in making these wines because not only are they wines that we love and enjoy drinking, but we feel these varieties thrive and are relevant in our area. As young winemakers at the forefront of a new wine region, we are interested in exploring the potential and synergy between these aromatic varietals and their role in distinguishing the culinary West Coast of Canada as an emerging and unified cuisine.
