SCOUT LIST: 10 Things That You Should Absolutely Do Between Now & Next Week

by Michelle Sproule | The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit. The Scout List is our carefully considered, first rate agenda of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

In-Store | Sweet news: Mother Mother will be at Zulu doing a free in-store performance on Tuesday night and you’re invited. Not only does the band plan to throw down with a ‘special intimate stripped down performance’ but they’ll be hanging out afterwards. This gig will be packed so get sorted and get there early.
Tuesday September 18 | 6pm | Zulu Records | 1972 West 4 | Free | Details

Gather | Jimi Hendrix Remberance Day is on Tuesday. If you’re down with hiking your way to the Jimi Hendrix Shrine on Union St. to pay tribute, there is a bit of a BYOB thing going on….”Enjoy a free night of music, chilling, and conversation with other Hendrix enthusiasts. We will also show some documentaries about the life of the legend. Jam sessions are welcome if people bring instruments.”
Tuesday, September 18 | 7-midnight | 207 Union @ Main | Free | Details

Alone Together | Ever have a nagging feeling that something is missing? Wonder if a stronger connection to your civic community might make the difference? You’re not alone, friend. The good news is that SFU is looking to do something about it by holding a Public Square Community Summit this week to explore the idea of Metro Vancouver’s civic disconnection. The plan is to explore ways to strengthen engagement across community and cultural divides. Have a look at what is planned (from brainstorming and mayoral roundtables to comedy and storytelling) and get involved as poets, artists, community leaders, business owners, film makers, librarians and plain old citizens (hooray) toss around ideas to connect the city to themselves and each other.

Art & the City | Pecha Kucha Night Vol.23 goes down this week. This time around the gathering of local creatives will be presenting 20 images (for 20 seconds each) on the theme of Art & The City. Particicpants include a fascinating group of artists, musicians, community activists, curators and gallery directors. The event will take place at the Vogue Theatre and there will be an after-party at the Contemporary Art Gallery that will see Vancouver’s community at rest drinking mediocre canned beer (typical). Kind of a great mind-expanding, culturally significant way to spend your Friday night. Yes, it’s sold out, but we do have a pair of tickets to give away. Stay tuned.
Friday September 21 | Doors 6:30 | Vogue Theatre| $15 | Details

Culture | The Olio Festival is fast approaching and you’ll be wanting to work a few of its gigs into your schedule. It’s hard to know where to begin as there’s something for everyone: bands like Hard Drugs, Julie Doiron and Bend Sinister are playing and the line-up is not limited to music (though they could have stopped there and still have come out looking pretty good). There’s also art, storytelling, skate and film events, and much more. Check out Enter The Dance Club at Shudder Gallery. There’s lots going on!
Wednesday Sept 19 – Sunday Sept 23 | Various times | Various Locations |  Various prices (and some free gigs too!) | Details

Photography | We’re looking forward to popping down to The Salt Building in Olympic Village this weekend to check out the 4th Annual 12×12 Vancouver Photo Marathon Exhibit. Get this: “Now in its fourth cycle, 12×12 challenges photographers of all ages, experience, and walks of life to the ultimate test of skill, creativity and endurance: Capturing 12 exposures on 12 themes on a single roll of 12 exposure film over the course of 12 hours.” The results of this special black + white edition of the 12×12 format should be pretty awesome.
Saturday September 22 | 6pm | Salt Building in The Village on False Creek | Free | Details

Equinox | An equinox occurs twice a year (around 20 March and 22 September), when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun and our day and night are roughly the same in duration. In the Spring, that’s a fantastic thing, because we look forward to more sunlight and longer days. In the Fall, not so much. Don’t worry, the clock doesn’t go back until the first week in November, but we’re now headed in that direction for real. The September equinox, also known as the autumnal equinox, goes down this Saturday. No point in trying to ignore it. Summer is over.

History of Film | If you’re a super duper film lover (or your roommates are making you crazy and you need somewhere to hide out for big chunks of time) consider heading to the Vancity Theatre to catch The Story of Film in which…”The history of cinema gets a long overdue reorientation in this epic 15-hour documentary series by the avid and engaging Mark Cousins. Tracing the evolution of film styles not only across the decades but across the globe, Cousins unearths countless undiscovered or misplaced treasures and talks film with the masters. A smorgasbord for movie lovers of every type.” 15 hours in a movie theatre is a bit extreme, but this screening will run across two days. Part 1 (1890s-1950s) takes place (for 480 minutes) on Saturday. Part 2 (1960 – present) goes down on Sunday (for a whopping 540 mins). In both cases the running time includes two one-hour intermissions at 1pm and 5pm.
Saturday, September 22 + Sunday, September 23 | Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour) | Tickets $15 per day | Details

Trinkets | Oh Oh Oh – who doesn’t love a good Gypsy Market? Fantastic news on that front: there is one going on this weekend and it’ll be a doozy. Over 25 vintage pickers, collectors, stylists, designers, and retailers are setting up to flog their very best vintage clothing, accessories, shoes, and jewellery (and who knows what else) at Fortune Nightclub. Yes, you read that correctly. And you know what that means? Not just clothing but booze and music too. Doesn’t get much better than that, does it?
Sunday, September 23 | 5pm-Midnight | Fortune Night Club (147 E. Pender)| $2 | Details

Score of the week | The Black Lodge Diner pop-up (inspired by Twin Peaks) is happening on Sunday. Those in attendance will be served a slice of fresh cherry pie, a damn fine cup of Panoramic Coffee’s special Twin Peaks blend, and a big scoop of Sunday Morning‘s brown butter pecan ice cream. There will only be 60 slices of pie, so make sure you show up on time as space is limited and on a first come, first served basis. We’ll see you there.
Sunday, September 23 | 6-11pm | 434 Columbia St | $12

Have a good week!
