ZULU REPORT: All The Awesome Sounds That You Should Be Listening To This Week

by Nic Bragg | From Kitsilano’s Zulu Records, we once again present our weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, we provide The Track – the song that is on heavy rotation in the shop this week; The Playlist – which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig – the ‘must see’ show of the week; and The Glance – which details the best live acts that are on the immediate horizon. From our ears to yours, enjoy…

THE TRACK

BOB DYLAN Duquesne Whistle

Here is the first official video for Dylan’s much hyped new release, Tempest. We love it. We have watched this at the store about 20 times. The romantic part of the video is pretty lame, but the shots of Dylan walking around with his posse are straight up amazing. He is still the king. Overall, Tempest is classic Bob Dylan in that the songs are great and there’s always a sense of his off-kilter approach to the arrangements, instrumentation and aesthetic. For these new songs Dylan is in a swampy place, mining the post-Django vampy terrain and giving us his best chutzpah vocal delivery. Things are lively. Horns blast. Guitars slink and Bobby croons in his best Waits-ian way. Like we said, he is still the king.

The Playlist

THE FRESH & ONLYS Presence of Mind

Who doesn’t love San Fran’s superb psych-pop rockers? Their latest release on Mexican Summer is a dreamy reverb-drenched listen recalling the glory days of The Feelies, Dream Syndicate and R.E.M. Here at the store we have a bunch of limited edition 7” that we are giving away.

JOHN CALE Face to the Sky

John Cale’s voice is so bold that it can be paired with almost anything and come off sounding dignified and grand. As a member of alt-music royalty – that’s what years of experimentalism, VU droning, string arranging, and Bowie and Eno hanging gets you – we really need to kneel before his throne. Welcome back.

CONVERGE Aimless Arrow

The Refused are back! Even local rockers Sparkmarker are back! Yes, hardcore is back in a huge way. Converge have always been an intense band and this new track is sure to bring the noise. Actually, I just got a text…this is neo-screamo!

MOUSE ON MARS They Know Your Name

Just as glitch rocking as ever, Mouse on Mars drop this hammering vocoderized track for all those keeping the electronica flame burning. Dig the high res shots of lab work, colour drops, and experimental cell biology.

YEASAYER Longevity

Did anyone check out Yeasayer at the Commodore last week? If so, please report back that the aging techniques in this video have been fully reversed! It is really scary when the singer becomes skull and bones.

MOON DUO Sleepwalker

All hail King Khan! His exercise video is awesome as the music is deep psyche-trance drone rock a la Sacred Bones! After a hard night of partying you are going to want a work out and shape up!

DAVID BRYNE & ST. VINCENT Who

Here is your first visual sneak peak of a record that will surely command mucho listens when it arrives later this month! Shot on location in the perfect nowhere town in America – which makes sense as these two talented musicians are getting mobbed everywhere else right now.

THE BLACK KEYS Little Black Submarines

Gritty and sweaty tavern shaking rock is how we describe the sound of America’s biggest rock duo The Black Keys. Just a few years ago they were playing red lame clad bars like this one while people shot pool causally in the corner – then they realised the American dream.

JJ DOOM Guv’nor

Jneiro Jarel & DOOM combine forces for this super catchy beat banger! We are giving away replica masks here in the store – while supplies last! Serious.

THE GIG

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE Wednesday September 19th MALKIN BOWL

Hey…don’t get down thinking that summer is ending. Traditionally, September is amazing in Vancouver and taking in some late night freak rock in Stanley Park at dusk is probably a wise idea considering the wet weather ahead. Our pals at Livenation have given us a few pairs of tickets to give away for this show (come by and enter) and so we can’t really resist giving it a shout out to our Scout followers. The latest Animal Collective jam grooves on Centipede Hz find this NYC outfit branching out a bit more than usual and really getting into their rock out moments. Standout tracks include this one – Today’s Supernatural – as well as Applesauce and Mercury Man which bubbles over with synth mash and a blur of drum machines. Hopefully these new tracks will mesh in nicely with the classic AC live sound at the Malkin! Seeing these guys in the woods is a dream for most – so make a point to make it out!
