ZULU REPORT: All The Awesome Sounds That You Should Be Listening To This Week

by Nic Bragg | From Kitsilano’s Zulu Records, we once again present our weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, we provide The Track – the song that is on heavy rotation in the shop this week; The Playlist – which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig – the ‘must see’ show of the week; and The Glance – which details the best live acts that are on the immediate horizon. From our ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

JAPANDROIDS The House That Heaven Built

Vancouver’s own Japandroids are currently on a serious roll. Their latest release Celebration Rock has earned them huge praise and vaulted the duo of Brian King and David Prowse on to some pretty massive international stages. Currently out on the road for a four month stint of rock madness, it is clear that these guys are full intent on working their asses off, and if this video is any indication, partying hard while doing so! For their explosive live show, Japandroids have really crafted their stage sound to become something that is visceral, intense and unquestionably loud – from the opening riff of this song the carnage in the pit ensues. Their home-coming show is December 22nd at the Rickshaw.

The Playlist

BOB MOULD The Descen

Everyone loves Husker Du. New Day Rising was an anthem for high school ennui. Bob Mould proved he had a sensitive side during his solo years. Except with Sugar, which proved his is the master of loud guitars. Now he returns to Merge Records and focuses on his most Du-esque rocking ever!

DINOSAUR JR. Watch The Corner

From one loud guitar master to another guru of the Marshall Stack – J. Mascis! Another song about high school ennui except this one is from the point of view of the teenager.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE Today’s Supernatural

I’ve never been to Burning Man, but watching this dune buggy rip through a desert while dudes with crazy face paint play on clay covered keyboards makes me think that Animal Collective are big fans. If this is any indication of what the new record sound like, then we are in for one wild ride come September 3rd!

GRIMES Genesis

The one good thing about shooting out in the desert is you don’t have to pay a location fee. Anyway, from Animal Collective’s Burning Man freakout we move on to Grimes’ own personal freak out vision. Warning there are shots of people riding around in Escalades.

THE XX Coexist

In the ultimate teaser move, Zulu faves The XX give us a sneak peak of what will become one of the most significant fall new releases. Locked up in a Tokyo hotel room late at night, the trio perform one of the more mellow tracks from the album. Feels like a Lost in Translation moment.

ARIEL PINK Only In My Dreams

The scene in LA is crazy. The Chili Peppers are no longer the kings of that town. Now a guy called Ariel Pink is the ruler and he is shaking things up in a very trashy way. This video from his new album Mature Themes demonstrates he is also a talented actor.

THE GIG

THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH The Vogue Theatre September 10th

Well in all truthfulness this show has been sold out for months, so if you can actually be lucky enough to procure a ticket to see Kristian Matsson a.k.a. The Tallest Man On Earth then we highly recommend taking in this night of singer-songwriter magic! Having been compared to every influential artist from Dylan to Cohen, Matsson is considered by critics to be an artist that is only just hinting at his future legacy as each of his records builds a steady following of devote fans. Adding to his hype, Kristian recently performed to a sold out crowd at the prestigious Newport Folk Festival, which was the same place Dylan came out, and the reviews were off the hook. Something tells me this will be your last chance to see him in Vancouver for quite a while – especially in a small ornate room such as the Vogue!
