FIELD TRIP #594: A Day Of Solitude, Birds, Fresh Fruit & Clean Air On Westham Island

by Michelle Sproule | If you can only afford to skip town for a day, consider heading toward Ladner/Delta and out to Westham Island (directions). There’s something so relaxing about the sound of wooden slats under your tires (be they car or bike) as you cross the Westham Island Bridge. On the other side are soft roads lined by long grass and foxgloves, u-pick berry farms and roadside egg and vegetable stands. The land is flat and a little wild, and the people are mighty friendly. A few things to do while on the Island:

Westham Island Herb Farm | A great place to stop for fresh veggies. Pick up plants from the greenhouse and preserves, honey, flowers and gifts from the adorable on-site ‘general store’.
9-4 Daily | 4690 Kirkland Road | Details

Walk the Reifel Bird Sanctuary | Reifel is a protected habitat for migratory birds located at the northern end of the island. It’s a beautiful place, and since it’s nt migration season at the moment, it’s acres of mostly stunning solitude. Even if you’re not in to birds, it’s a lovely place. Stretch your legs and breathe!
9am- 4pm | 5191 Robertson Road, Delta | $5 | Details

Pick Your Own | Visit Emma Lea Farms, not just for the berries, but also for the handy little ice cream stand that serves ice cream cones, milkshakes, sundaes, and smoothies – all using fresh berries. So good!
Open Daily 10am – 6pm | 2727 Westham Island Road (Ladner) | Details
