SEEN IN VANCOUVER #370: Those Crazily Creative “Art Bikes” Cruising Around Town

Art Bikes. Maybe you’ve seen them? They’re usually twice as long or tall as all the other bikes on the road and are often adorned with decorative bits. Crazy looking suckers! So what’s the deal? What on earth possesses people to build and ride these contraptions? Well, the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire recently asked Vancouverites to start decorating, building and creating custom bikes, of all shapes and sizes (the crazier the better), and we’re seeing lots of the results cruising around town…

The idea was to find a way to promote local Do-It-Yourself culture and the maker movement by encouraging cross-pollination between bike builders and artists groups with the end result being creative and thought-provoking artwork for the public realm. And ta-da! Art Bikes. So now you can wonder a little less. We’re still trying to figure out how the nutters who ride these things dismount. It’s not likely to be a graceful affair, but life is better when padded by little mysteries. Follow the Art Bike project on Twitter here, and for the skinny on the upcoming, not-to-be-missed Maker Faire, click through the jump…

Vancouver Mini Maker Faire is a weekend-long, community-oriented and interactive festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds with a mission to entertain, connect and inspire. Check it out on June 23rd-24th at the PNE Forum. Buy your tickets in advance.
