Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Nic Bragg over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present his weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, which details the best gigs on the immediate horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

THE TRACK

JACK WHITE Sixteen Saltines

Jack has been creating a ton of buzz in advance of his first proper solo release on his own Third Man Records label. In fact, the label reached out to us to see if we would be interested in test driving an advance copy of the wax on Record Store Day this Saturday, April 21st. Knowing how much detail these guys put into their thick vinyl pressings, we instantly knew that this advance copy of White’s righteous Blunderbuss release would be our best chance to hear it early in super high-fidelity. So, stop by at high noon that day as we drop the needle on one of the most anticipated LPs of 2012! This is a special listening party only on RSD 2012, and we are the only place in the city you will hear it. And get this: at the end of the day we will raffle off this instant collector’s item to one lucky vinyl junkie! In the meantime, check out the lead single Sixteen Saltines which showcases Jack at his balls-out best as he takes the riffage up a notch. Elsewhere, Blunderbuss is a more varied and complex listen. Another standout, Love Interruption, (premiered on SNL a month ago) is a sweet, folky ditty that broods with forlorn passion. Trust us, this epic record has it all!

The Playlist

SAID THE WHALE We Are 1980

It should be no surprise that Vancouver’s own Said The Whale are picked as a band to watch for 2012. They have been steadily gaining an adoring fanbase with each cool show. Plus our pals at The Peak were strong supporters from the early days. If you haven’t heard Little Mountain yet, it’s time to support the local.

PULP Party Hard

Jarvis Cocker and Pulp reformed for last weekend’s Coachella dates. Just seeing this footage makes us pine for the old days when Cocker’s swagger was infectious. Dear Friends at Livenation Canada, can you please bring them to the Commodore?

FISH AND BIRD Northern Zulu Sessions

Here is the first installment of a new series we have been working on at the record store. In-stores, interviews and a documentary from some of our favourite bands – all with you as the audience! Great Lake Swimmers and War on Drugs are in the can – up next: Tennis, Damien Jurado, and many many more!

MOONFACE Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips

All hail the return of Spencer Krug in rock mode! Post Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, Krug has gotten even more experimental with his work solo as Moonface, but here he hooks up with some Finnish prog-rockers and gets loose and easy…. Love it!

CHROMATICS Back From the Grave

How many of you figured out that this distinctly lo-fi video was shot on location at a chalet near Valemount on the Yellowhead Highway? We love the Chromatics in any spot.

THE HEAD AND THE HEART Go Your Own Way

Seattle Head and the heart are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and so it is nice to see pals from the North West getting their day in the sun! If you like Fleetwood Mac you will love this version, as Josiah and company give us a pretty faithful campfire version of Lindsay Buckingham’s epic tune.

THE GIG

TENNIS – BILTMORE CABARET Friday April 27

If you follow the Zulu Report here on Scout you already know that we are big fans of this great band from Denver! In fact we are on such good terms with them that they have agreed to perform in the store just before their big show at the Biltmore! Tennis is the work of husband and wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, and they have two amazing records to their name. The most recent, Young & Old attracted the attention of Patrick Carney of The Black Keys who produced their unique sound. Truly though, this was just the start of a series of bigger accomplishments for the young band, who now have graduated to the big league indie-rock festival circuit, late-night TV show engagements, and sold out shows in serious a-rooms across the continent. Opening the show at the Biltmore will be Vancouver’s own Shilohs… themselves a band that are shooting for the stars!
