Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS – “Cherub Rock” – Siamese Dream [Super Deluxe 3 Disc Reissue] (Virgin)

Just in time for Christmas, the Pumpkins have reissued way more than you ever thought you wanted from their timeless ‘92 classic. The entire album has been remastered PLUS there’s a disc chock-full of demos and wrongly discarded B-sides PLUS a DVD of their performance at The Metro in Chicago. Bill Corgan is still inspiring if you give him another chance.

The Playlist

SHE & HIM A Very She & Him Christmas (Merge)

Ben Gibbard’s now-ex-wife and the smooth folkster you know as M. Ward team up for an album of holiday cheer and yuletide carols. More than what you might think. My dad would like this a lot. My dad’s a “cool dad” though.

LOU REED & METALLICA Lulu (Warner Bros)

Are these guys going on tour at all? I actually think it would be badass. No, I don’t know what the hell I expected when I put this record on, but it’s Metallica headbanging with Lou Reed doing his best Lou Reed impression up front. Weirdly awesome.

KATE BUSH 50 Words For Snow (Fish People)

Her voice is still powerful enough to evoke tears from many. New LP on some strange label is a home run. Bush has been experiencing a surge in popularity the last few years, thanks for some reason to the chillwave movement. Regardless, I couldn’t be happier. I would like her to make beautiful, weird records until she dies. Spooky.

CRYSTAL STILTS Radiant Door EP (Sacred Bones)

Seems cool. Anything with a Sacred Bones stamp on the back gets played on my shift. This doesn’t disappoint. Great use of organs and handclaps. Reverb-soaked vocals, while getting a LITTLE played out in modern indie rock, prove to be essential to the mix of this great young band.

THE DO Both Ways Open Jaws (Siamese Squids)

This band is a duo that hails from Finland and France. From what I can tell a girl sings and a boy plays all the instruments. Fine. But the songwriting is actually pretty awesome. Fun jumpy verses split up with incredible releases in the choruses. I get it, you guys. Europe is weird.

ALL PIGS MUST DIE God is War (Southern Lord)

Can definitely imagine Beavis & Butthead causing some mayhem to this band. Powerful power metal from members of some of the genre’s greatest groups. Tough shit.

The Gig

Friday DECEMBER 2 – Color Me Obsessed [Film Screening] @ The Waldorf

Definitely go to this, you guys. The Replacements are one of the few record-nerd bands that actually garner repeat listens. This film appears to be a series of talking heads speaking about the fantastic, rambunctious group of young men from Minneapolis. I really wanna see this. Then throw in the Defektors and White Lung playing sets after the screening? Ah jeez.
