THEE OH SEES – “Carrion Crawler” – Carrion Crawler / The Dream EP (In The Red)

You ever try listening to this band without knowing their history? Turns out they are incredibly solid garage punk band. Who knew? No but seriously, this EP is fantastic. Cool thing about Thee Oh Sees: you never miss them long. Mean that in all sincerity. Enough goofing around from these bands taking 4 years per album. When yer goin’ to the studio, get in and get out, put your songs on tape. No need for horseplay.

KATHRYN CALDER Bright and Vivid (File Under: Music)

Well known from her duties in powerhouse power-pop band The New Pornographers, Kat Calder delivers her second awesome record as a solo artist. Clearly she can write excellent hooks and her backing is arguably the best in British Columbia. I saw ‘em last month at the Biltmore. Slayed.

SIGUR ROS Inni (XL)

The lads from Iceland are at it again, rockin’ some epic songs in gobbledygook. This time it’s a live affair. You can throw your emotions down a staircase or listen to this record with similar results.

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE Ceremonials (Island)

Flo’s voice (if that’s really her name) soars while the band does indeed chug away on their instruments. This is quite intense and quite good!

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER Replica (Software/Mexican Summer)

Where’s the harsh noise? It’s still there, I think. Regardless…gorgeous electronica from Mr. 0PN, I love this guy.

ETERNAL TAPESTRY & SUN ARAW Night Gallery (Thrill Jockey)

Two of the biggest names in modern psychadelic electronica team up to fulfil the promise shown in their Neon Commune shared bill back in 07. Straight sick.

TIM HECKER Dropped Pianos (Kranky)

Could listen to this all day, every day. This little record contains “sketches” from Hecker’s latest LP. Super great.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE NO BRAINER, YOU GUYS. Andrew WK is one of the greatest and still somehow underrated performers of his generation. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live in a few formats–solo piano, motivational speaker–but never with his full band. If you don’t go to this show, you might as well shut down your whole operation.
