Zulu Report: Everything That You Should Listen To This Week

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

GIRLS – “Die” – Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther)

You never heard Girls do anything like this before. They really rock out for once on this song, appropriately titled “Die”. For those who are kind of bugged by frontman Chris Owens’ voice (or annoying backstory—anybody else roll their eyes at that kind of thing?), you make take comfort in the fact that he puts his vocal melodies in the backseat and lets the loud ass guitars drive the song for several minutes. It’s an awesome classic rock jam (OK, it kinda reminds me of Wolfmother).

The Playlist

ST. VINCENT Strange Mercy (4AD)

A guitar goddess in her own right, Annie Clark takes a step forward and channels her inner Rhys Chatham on these sexy new avant songs. “Surgeon” has what will inevitably be my favourite synth part of 2011.

TORO Y MOI Freaking Out EP (Carpark)

More spiciness from Chazzy. It’s pretty awesome to see someone getting closer and closer to really finding their voice on each record. The new Toro EP is further down the line of the chillwave-disco genre he’s pioneering right now. Now if only he could have thought of a better title for the record. Ha!

ONEIDA Absolute II (Jagjaguwar)

The name Oneida originates from the Oneida people, one of North America’s native tribes. The word is loosely translated to mean “People of the Standing Stone” which kind of makes sense for this band. Dudes have been making minimalist drone rock music since 1997 (what is that, 15 years now?). They’re still standing, unwavering and unrelenting on their third LP of the “Thank Your Parents” trilogy. Whoa.

RY COODER Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down (Nonesuch)
¸

Cooder’s excellently-titled 15th LP is a comfortable notch in the storied guitarist’s belt. This kind of discography and resumé is something that all musicians can aspire to. The message of the lyrics echoes his work ethic: keep plugging away, keep working hard, keep going. It inspires me.

CSS La Liberacion (V2)

Some very literal lyrics on this dance pop record from Brazil’s finest New Ravers. The record is quite good – lots of grooves that I can actually imagine myself literally dancing to at a party in a loft at the end of a hot Vancouver summer. They also still look really great (I know because there’s a picture of the band on the back of the CD).

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS I’m With You (Warner)

The Chilis return to form. Yipes. This video already has 4.3 million views!

The Gig

Thursday SEPT 15 – Low @ Rio

This should be an absolute joy/bummer. Low is playing at the Rio this week and I couldn’t be more excited/disappointed. The beautiful/depressing trio from Duluth MN are out on the road in support of their fantastic new LP C’Mon. Imagine the feeling of dread upon hearing the news that you’ll be working as a line judge in a Serena Williams match at the US Open, put it in a blender and mash it up with the memory of that one thing you did that nobody knows about but the weight of which crushes your very existence and you’re somewhere near where I imagine Al Sparhawk’s mind is when he picks up a guitar.
