SOUNDTRACKING: “Red Gate” At 152–156 West Hastings Facing Closure By City Hall

by Daniel Colussi | Earlier this month, the City Of Vancouver ordered the building at 152-156 West Hastings to be vacated within 30 days. The Trocadero building has long been a unique, independently organized site for musicians and artists to both create and present their work.

The Red Gate Gallery, located at street level, has acted as an art gallery/show space for local and international artists and musicians for the past seven years, and even longer under various other names.

In the two stories upstairs from the Red Gate is over 15,000 square feet of affordable studio space for dozens of local artists. As well, the building top floor of the building is home to Vancouver’s famed JC/DC studios, known for their consistently great work over the last 15 years with Destroyer, Rodney Graham, The New Pornographers, Apollo Ghosts, and too many more artists to list here.

The Red Gate is asking for the public’s support in keeping 152-156 West Hastings by visiting The Red Gate website and downloading a pdf. I have personally enjoyed many art openings and seen many great bands play at the Red Gate (the totally packed, incredibly sweaty and hot Wolf Parade/Architecture In Helsinki show of 2005 was definitely a highlight!) and would love to see this site continue on in some capacity.

  1. well, if the inside is as run-down and neglected on the inside as the outside, i can understand why the city is moving on the site. No one wants to stifle creativity, but the state of many of the buildings down there are dangerous, especially if the public are in them viewing exhibits etc. I applaud the city taking a pro active stance.
