Vancouver, BC | The Waldorf presents Irish music, dance and special performances this St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17 in the Cabaret. The evening, hosted by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Joel Hanna, will feature BC Regiment Irish Pipes and Drums, O’Conner-O’Brien Irish Dancers, De Dannan and more…

About the Performers

Joel Hanna began his training at age 9 in Vancouver B.C. competitively achieving success all over the world. Joel’s professional career took off after joining RIVERDANCE: The Show in 1997, performing throughout Britain and North America. During this time he was selected to be the subject of a CBC/Riverdance produced documentary called ” The Badboy and the Hometown Girl”, which is still broadcast today. After two seasons Joel left the company to join the original stars of the show, Colin Dunne and Jean Butler, to perform in they’re production Dancing On Dangerous Ground in London’s West End, Radio City Music Hall, and the Royal Variety Performance. In 2007 Joel created “Revolution: Sweat, Dance, Rock & Roll” which debuted in New York City at the world famous Joyce Theater during its 25th anniversary season in Oct. 07′. Following the phenomenal success of its run, the production performed a national tour and a European tour is slated for the summer of 2011. He is also the first dancer from Vancouver of any style, to have his own show open and run in New York City.

Joel’s unique sensibility has made his performance and teaching style sought after all over the world and gained him acceptance into the international Modern and Tap communities, and opportunities to perform on stage with Legends like Pete Seeger, Andrea Bocelli, Charles “Cholly” Atkins, Jimmy Slyde, and Jeni LeGon, Dianne Walker, Brenda Bufalino, and Jason Samuels Smith.

The British Columbia Regiment Irish Pipes and Drums are one of five serving Irish regimental pipe bands in the world and appear under the direction of Pipe Major, Alistair Pattison, and by the kind permission of Lt. Col. Kadanoff. The band, which is an all-volunteer band made up of civilian women, men and youth of diverse ethnic origins is based out of the Beatty Street Drill Hall in Vancouver. The 28-member band have become a visible symbol of the Irish heritage.

The O’Connor-O’Brien School of Irish Dance was formed in the summer of 2009 with a merger of two pre-existing Irish dance schools. Always a St.Patricks day favourite around town, The OCOB dance troupes have been honoured to have performed with The Cheiftains, The Barra MacNeils, Ashley Mac Isaac, The Irish Rovers, Tiller´s Folley, and The Olympic Opening Ceremony.

About The Waldorf

After 63 years in business, East Vancouver’s Famous Waldorf Hotel has been reimagined as a creative compound where contemporary art, music, food and culture convene under one roof. Special events, unique spaces, great food and hospitality. There’s always something happening at The Waldorf.

Press

“While offering a nod to the hotel’s Polynesian lineage, the Waldorf redux has mercifully sidestepped kitsch to emerge as a landmark destination for creative travelers. A haven for artists, musicians and cultural thrill-seekers, the Waldorf offers an experience not easily forgotten, one that makes you feels as though you’re vacationing in New York rather than the heart of Vancouver’s east side.” – Globe and Mail
