VANCOUVERITES: Eight Minutes With Local Designer Jude Feller of “Lily + Jae”

We’re big fans of Jude Feller, the local designer behind Lily + Jae, and thought it was high time we got to know her better. Some background if you please…

After seven years in the costume department for film and television Jude left to pursue her dream in fashion. She launched her debut collection in spring of 2007. Within a year the brand expanded into the USA, followed by international recognition in Japan six months later.

lily + jae has progressed into a responsive fashion label with appeal to the contemporary woman.  The brand has appeared in Teen Vogue, British Glamour, and Nylon, and have been seen on stars such as Lily Allen, Amy Smart, Ashlee Simpson, and Sarah Polley.

What is your current favourite Lily + Jae design? The Olivia raincoat. [ed. note: ours too!]

Tell us what fashion item you are most looking forward to adding to your own closet for the spring 2011 season: High waisted wide leg denim. I love anything with a 70’s inspiration.

What about your favourite 2011 spring accessory? Friendship bracelets.

What sort of music does Lily + Jae like to play? More or less everything except techno, easy on the country, heavy on the reggae.

Why is Vancouver a good city for independent design? For starters we have a very supportive community here and for the most they are a complete inspiration.

Is there a local designer or artist that you admire above all others? Why? Dace. She’s been called the “Godmother” for a reason [link].

Best Vancouver place to be inspired by emerging artistic talent: Eugene Choo and Blim Markets.

Best Vancouver location for people watching: Depends on what you’re after. I really enjoy airports. I want to know who’s coming and going.

Three websites you visit every day: Honestly? Gmail, Facebook and Twitter. Blogs: Weheartit.com, fffound.com and refinery29.com.

Three places you like to take out of town guests: East is East on Main (best Chai ever), Trout Lake for an early morning walk and Bao Bei in Chinatown

Where do you enjoy shopping in Vancouver? One Of A Few, Aritzia and, of course, Eugene Choo.

What inspires you at Lily + Jae? A glimpse into another’s life.

If you were going to recommend a Vancouver artist/designer/musician/personality for Scout to interview, who would it be? I really like Ben Tour (artist) and Mono (designer)
