Zulu Report: “Black Mountain” Plays & “Quest For Fire” Rules

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

currently on heavy rotation in the store…

Anyone who’s been digging the kind of riff-heavy, deep psych-seances put forth by Black Mountain and the Black Angels in recent years will no doubt adore the skull-rattling riffery of Toronto’s Quest For Fire. These guys deal interstellar sonic explorations on every track of Light From Paradise (listen to “The Greatest Hits By God” above). Sure, it recalls Hawkwind in it’s epic scope, but since when was that a bad thing? Throw this album your stereo on and let your brain be warped across the chasms of time and space. I will see you on the astral plane, the gentle play-space where children and gods frolic.

The Playlist

The records we can’t get enough of this week…

BRIAN ENO Small Craft On A Milk White Sea (Warp)

A delectable sonic bouillabaisse from the father of ambient rock!

BOSTON SPACESHIPS Our Cubehouse Still Rocks (GBVI)

Bob Pollard has released way too much music in the last few years, but this new Boston Spaceships rocks and you need it.

TYVEK Nothing Fits (In The Red)

These Zulu-approved garage land rockers find the perfect fit between melody and anarchy.

NEU! Neu ’86 (Gronland)

Neu were genius, Neu were ahead of their time, Neu anticipated musical trends long before anyone caught, Neu released only three albums during their time. This is new Neu. You need this.

TALLEST MAN ON EARTH s/t (Gravitation)

Recording predating his much lauded Dead Oceans debut, this is the Swede in undercover mode, before the countryside went up in flames. This is real.

AVEY TARE Down There (Paw Tracks)

The AC frontman takes the bloggers and chill wavers to task on his debut solo release. Expect freakish groove and bummer head trips graced with specs of light and humour.

NEON INDIAN Mind Ctrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed (Fader Label)

Psychic Chasms the album itself (a chill wave classic) and then the entire album remixed a host of heavy hitters (Toro Y Moi, Yacht, Bibio and more).

MF GRIMM You Only Live Twice (DayByDay)

Audio graphic novel from Grimm that catalogues the harrowing realities of grim NYC life.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN The Promise (Sony)

The boss is back, and with the likes of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade referencing his moves, he’s sounding as fresh as ever.

The Gig

The upcoming show we’re really looking forward to…

Black Mountain and the Black Angels play the Commodore on Wednesday December 1st.

Having already sold out one show a second was added, which means you still have a chance to see these Black-psych juggernauts go toe-to-toe. The Black Angels are masters of slow-smouldering Texas-fried psych, and are a favourite seller at the store. As for Black Mountain, since hitting the big leagues they’re appearances here in their hometown are sadly few and far between. Black Mountain’s sound reaches true fruition as a live entity, and this show is guaranteed to be a scorcher.
