Brad Miller’s “Red Wagon” Diner Open At East Hastings & Garden

IMG_6155

by Andrew Morrison | Brad Miller’s Red Wagon opened yesterday, way out on East Hastings. It’s an unpretentious little spot that still retains the signage of the “Le Do” Vietnamese restaurant it replaced, and my first pass was a very good one. I had a soft-bunned, surprisingly spiced pulled pork sandwich layered with cooling coleslaw that really satisfied, and stole a cheddar perogy littered with crisp bacon shards and moistened with sour cream from a friend. The decor is minimal, which I like, and the service prompt and friendly, which I like even more. I’m a sucker for a good lunch counter, and this one is awesome. I love how deep it is; almost like a desk! Dig it. Yet another tidy score for the east side. For more details on the place including the menu and loads of photos, click after the jump…

We broke the news of it’s coming back in the summer…

Restaurant veteran Brad Miller, who cut his teeth at Au Petit Chavignol, West and Bistro Pastis, is on the verge of going solo with The Red Wagon, a new 35 seat diner serving breakfast and lunch (and possibly dinner) in the old King’s Cafe location at 2296 East Hastings (at Nanaimo). It will be, as he describes it, “a joint”. Full stop. I take that as meaning super casual. As for the food, he says we can expect “down home cooking”: sandwiches, good burgers, salads and such – stuff that is “approachable and reflective of the neighbourhood.” Opening day is slated for later in October.
