Zulu Report: On Crocodiles, Nymphs And Grinderman, Oh My!

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

Grinderman’s outrageous new video for Heathen Child, from their new stomper Grinderman 2 (Anti).

Grinderman is essentially Nick Cave and some Bad Seeds in full on sexed up, no holds barred, dirty old man rocker mode. Whereas Cave’s work under his own name is more aligned with Euro-flavoured maturity and austere songcraft, Grinderman is pure Dyonisian excess. I mean, this is a band whose first single was entitled “No Pussy Blues.” It’s a little tongue in cheek maybe, but ultimately it’s just fun to see a band embrace unbridled sexual energy that made Elvis seem dangerous fifty years ago. The hilariously playful “Heathen Child” video has something for everyone: Cave co. dressed as Greek gods shooting lightning bolts from their rumps, sexually frustrated wolves prowling expensive hotel rooms, and gratuitous shots of breasts.

The Playlist

NYMPH s/t (The Social Registry)
NYC’s distinguished and always reliable Social Registry music label gives us a new act to gush over – Nymph, the alter ego of psychedelic overlord Matty McDermott. Dig the purple skulls!

NO BUNNY First Blood (Goner)
No Bunny is southern fried garage rock squalor featuring a front man that performs in only some soiled underwear and an equally soiled bunny mask. It looks freaky, but it sounds aaaaalright!
Watch if you dare

DEERHUNTER Halcyon Digest (4AD)
Cox n crew dig deep into the roots of indie rock and present a fresh palette of sounds; they’re still gorgeously dreamy but this is maybe their most adventures outing. Dig that saxophone!.

THE DRUMS s/t (Universal)
They look and sound like a couple of English blokes, and they’re New Order/Cure moves are pure limey, but think again cuz these chaps are Floridians!

CROCODILES Sleep Forever (Fat Possum)
These Crocodiles have racoon eyes, heavy coughs, and a penchant for drugged out devotionals. Bonus fact: one dude in this band is married to lead Dum Dum Girl Dee Dee!

LAETITIA SADIER The Trip (Drag City)
Sadier steps out from the shadows of Stereolab for her first solo album-proper (discount those many fine Monade releases). Expect her typically beautiful voice, an eclectic range of musicality and a little bit of French language content.

STORNOWAY Beachcomber’s Windowsill (4AD)
Stornoway have that it-feels-good-to-be-sad vibe down perfect. It’s the twee pop vibe that made Belle & Sebastion worm their way into you heart, and Stornoway is poised to do the same.

PIERCED ARROWS Descending Shadows (Vice)
Pierced Arrows are for all intents and purposes Dead Moon, which is to say, they’re absolutely essential garage-n-roll greatness! No gimmicks here, just pure blood and sweat drenched devotion to the telling the goddamned truth!

V/A Vodou Spirits of Life: Haitian Vodou (Soul Jazz)
Soul Jazz is renown for archiving little known, forgotten musics and this set is particular set is a mindblowing, otherwordly collection of drum and vocal chants. Must be heard to be understood. Beautiful. More vodou here.

NO AGE Everything In Between (Sub Pop)
This LA dream-punk duo prove their worth on an inspired collection of experimentally-composed but ultimately really catchy jams.

The Gig

TEENAGE FANCLUB with The Shilohs at the Biltmore Saturday Oct 16th

Phew, there’s a LOT of shows to check out in the next two months, but one that we here at Zulu and Scout are especially excited about is Scotland’s finest rockers Teenage Fanclub appearing at the Biltmore, where they’ll be playing selection from their matchless catalogue of power pop gems, as well as more recent goodies from their Zulu-approved 2010 Shadows. I can’t wait to hear “Baby Lee” and “Everything Flows.” Local boy-men The Shilohs open. Be there!

  1. I’m super confused, are the Nymphs the Stornoways or vice versa? They definitely have the same sound (and lead singer?!).
    Please clarify
