Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…
The Track
Big Boi’s video for the banging new track Shutterbug (from his masterful new album Sir Lucious Left Foot…Son Of Chico Dusty, Def Jam)
It’s my personal feeling that hip hop as a genre of music has steadily devolved into an empty shell of its former glory. Maybe that’s just me. Having said that, there are occasional rays of brilliance, Big Boi’s new solo joint being one such rare example. Sir Lucious…is a dense kaleidoscope of sci-fi funk, verbal dexterity and hooks to the max, and thankfully, Big Boi spares us the painful skits that uselessly clog so many a hip hop album. A thrill-ride of a listen. Well done.
The Playlist
MAHJONGG Long Shadow Of The Paper Tiger (K)
Mahjongg join the ranks of the legendary K Records roster and skitter and bounce their way through a fine selection of post rock bangers.
NU SENSAE TV Death And The Devil (Nominal)
Our fave local voodoo punk twosome exorcise fresh demons on this stunner new LP, and frontlady Andrea’s blood curdling screams haunt me long after the record stops spinning.
THE FRESH AND ONLYS August In My Mind (Captured Tracks)
SF’s golden boys jingle jangle their way across this nice li’l summer time ep on the esteemed Captured Tracks label, which is fast becoming the gold standard record label of note.
THE BITTERS East General (Mexican Summer)
Fucked Up’s drummer steps out on his own for these eleven thrashed out summer time punk jams. Perfect listening for the fixed-gear beach bumming set.
WOLF PARADE Expo 86 (Sub Pop)
The Wolf return and keep it simple: Boekner channels the boss, Krug gets his Bowie on, and the whole package comes together as a modern angst-anthem classic.
FRAZEY FORD Obadiah (Nettwork)
Ford steps out of from the shadow of her main gig, The Be Good Tanyas, and shines on this solo effort of guitar, banjo, and strings n things.
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER Returnal (Mego)
Editions Mego of Austria returns to the world of vinyl with this absolute stunner from mystical journeyman Daniel Lapotin. Think 80s John Carpenter soundtracks, Klause Schulze and subterranean whale calls.
GAYNGS Relayted (Jagjaguwar)
10CC referencing adult contemporary for the contemporary adult in all of us.
TWINSISTER Color Your Life (Infinite Best)
Whatever happened to bands just writing catchy songs that get stuck in your head? Twinsister return to the glory days of indie pop majesty, before the world so crazy and out of control.
BEACH FOSSILS s/t (Captured Tracks)
Captured Tracks is a label known for breaking new bands into the ether. Beach Fossils follows in that tradition.
The Gig
Bonnie Prince Billy + The Cairo Gang w/ Sir Richard Bishop as opener, Wednesday August 11th at the Vogue.
Will Oldham is a masterful performer and his most recent collaborative album with The Cairo Gang has been getting steady play at the store. Consider us fans. To see them play at the lovely confines of the Vogue is guaranteed to be memorable. That Sir Richard Bishop of Sun City Girls fame is opener just sweetens the deal that much more. Be there.
