Scout List: 14 Very Cool Things To Do In Vancouver This Week…

mcs-victoria-may-2010-199

The main objective of this website is to scout out and promote the things that make Vancouver such a sweet place to be. We do this with an emphasis on the city’s independent spirit to foster a sense of connectedness within and between our communities, and to introduce our readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit.

The Scout List is our carefully considered first rate list of super awesome things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week. From our calendar to yours…

Edible Landscaping and gardening are hot ticket events this weekend. “What is edible landscaping? Are back alleys and school grounds potential food production sites? How does a farmers’ market fit into a neighbourhood? Join author Spring Gillard and architect Sean McEwan as we explore Mole Hill, a unique urban housing project in Vancouver’s west end; a neighbourhood that incorporated sustainable agriculture into its planning and design. The Mole Hill project includes the restoration of 26 houses, creation of 170 units of affordable housing, a child-care precinct, community gardens in the back alley and greenlinks. There is also a supportive housing and day care program for persons living with HIV/AIDS. We will then walk by the school gardens at Lord Roberts School on our way to the West End Farmers’ market. Tara McDonald, Executive Director of Vancouver Farmers Markets will give us the low down on this successful market. There will be time afterwards to fill up your cloth shopping bags with farm fresh produce.” To register email: [email protected]
June 12 |  10am – noon | $35

And afterward – once you are suitably inspired by what you’ve seen – you can whip over to Strathcona for an edible gardening workshop. As we mentioned in a previous post here, it’s not too late to turn out a healthy crop of edible goodies in your own backyard this summer. But where to begin? There’s a really cool class going down this weekend that will get you on track.

“A proposal has been made to construct a community garden in David Lam Park. The Y.M.C.A. has submitted an application to build an Intercultural Community Garden at the corner of Homer Street and Beach Crescent, northwest of the tennis courts. The garden will be approximately five meters by 30 meters. Because the proposed garden is on park property, it must be formally approved by the Park Board. The approval process involves canvassing community support for the garden. An information table will be set up on June 15, 5pm to 8 pm, in the Roundhouse Centre lobby. Staff and project proponents will on hand to discuss the project.”
June 15 | 5 pm – 8 pm | Roundhouse Community Centre
