Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…
The Track
Male Bonding performing Years Not Long live for the BBC from their new album Nothing Hurts (Sub Pop).
I can’t help but feel that there’s something distinctly grungy going on as I watch Male Bonding rocking out in this video. The saggy striped sweaters, the shaggy hair, the bombastic drummer, the power-trio line up – am I crazy to say that Male Bonding are probably very well versed in their Cobain? Musically, the album is more consistently about trashy punk than Nirvana’s more quiet and jangly moments. It’s nothing revolutionary, no, but Nothing Hurts is full of the kind of trashy-pop that never goes out of style.
The Playlist
10 Albums To Adore
SLEEPY SUN Fever (ATP)
Sun-scorched psychedelic ramblings from the Steve McBean school of rock.
TY SEGALL Melted (Goner)
Melted is the successful marriage of Kinksy pop and Stooges-worthy guitar destruction, and a career highlight.
ARCADE FIRE Suburbs 10 (Merge)
What else do you need to know beyond the fact that this is new Arcade Fire.
PUFFY AEREOLAS In The Army 1981 (Siltbreeze)
A cryptically-titled offering that’s repped by the mighty Siltbreeze of Philedelphia.
WHITEHOUSE Great White Death (Come Organization)
Superstars of the UK power electronics scene ‘85 classic rager brought back of wax well in time for Halloween.
DEAD WEATHER Sea Of Cowards (WEA)
Jack White. Alison Mosshart. Balls out.
NO UFO’S Soft Coast (Nice Up Int’l)
Limited supplies left in the store, don’t sleep on this local dance-trance stunner.
THE PONYS Deathbed + 4 (Matador)
I feared this band to be dead. Deathbed proves otherwise. Easily at the head of their fuzzed-out-rock class.
TEENAGE FANCLUB Shadows (Merge)
The ever reliable TF come through yet again with an affecting album of big classic pop.
ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI Before Today (4AD)
This long simmering ‘00s underdog finally strikes one out of the park with his warbled, 80’s indebted freak-pop.

THE GASLAMP KILLER plays 560 Seymour (the new Richards) on July 18th
Truth be told, I don’t really know what to expect from The Gaslamp Killer when he rolls into town. Buts his A Sufi And A Killer collaboration with Gonjasufi has been a stunner ever since it dropped a few months back, and a staple at the store ever since. As a live show I would expect a hazy, heady set of the kind of desert-blues that dominates the album. Add to that the novelty of entering the glitzy new digs known as 560 Seymour – the club that’s meant to replace the old Richards on Richards – and you’ve got yourself a solid Friday night.
