The Home Grown Long Weekend Of “Music Waste” Now Underway

4531698697_6efa63443c_b

by Sean Orr | It starts today with a fitting schedule of some of Vancouver’s best experimental noise-rock, and ends with a basketball jam at Strathcona Park. It is this year’s Music Waste, wherein the city’s best underground artists, musicians, DJs, comedians, and creatives gather for what was originally a response to the stale industry wank-fest known as New Music Waste. Growing through accretion like Katamari Damacy, the fest has hooked up with regular promoters and allows others to Go Your Own Waste by by adding their previously scheduled gig to the line-up.

Wednesday sees the alliance between the Anza Club’s Psych Night and Music Waste as well as Fake Jazz at Honey and Lick. Thursday after the early Zoo Shop show, and I remind you that it is essential you create your own schedule, I’ll probably stay close to Lick to see the crushing combo of Baptists, Boogie Monster, and Ahna at Lick, or maybe next door for some thrashy Vapid and Juvenile Hall; and I’ll be popping over to Shudder to see Dan Siney’s new work. Friday offers a collaboration with Damaged Goods at the Astoria with synth trash outfit MT-40 headlining a solid bill of Myths, Animal Bodies, and Muscles. After that across the street is noise couple Koban, classic punx with Needles+Pins, and one of Vancouver’s best, Makeout Videotape taking the stage at a ripe time of 2am. The Winnie Cooper DJs will be there. It also looks like the dub-step oriented GYOW show at W2 will be going late. Basketball!!

Saturday is probably the hardest day, but it looks like it will start off in the afternoon on Mount Pleasant as there are successive shows at Neptoon, Redcat, and Gene. Also on the hill are shows at Little Mountain and Lucky’s Comics. You could stay in Uptown for two shows at the Anza (including Balkan-tinged Mesamazing) and then end the night with Glory Days at the Biltmore or head downtown for a BBQ at Goody. If you’re already wasted you could do worse than to just walk over to the Astoria and park yourself there. If you’re able bodied then head to the Zoo Shop, The Lion’s Den (LDs), and probably to the Fauxbalt for a dreamy set of sounds from Milky Way, Cowards, Walter TV, Gang Violence, and World Club. I’ll be volunteering at Funky Winkerbeans that night.

I’ve posted the entire schedule below.

Passes are sold out but all shows are only $5
