Zulu Report: Loving Lightning Dust & Getting Stoked For Anvil

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

Lightning Dust | “Never Seen” from the album Infinite Light (Jagjaguwar)

Rarely does a video so perfectly reflect the mood of the music that its paired with. In “Never Seen,” from local dark-love duo Lightning Dust (Amber and Josh of Black Mountain), we see molasses-slow images of dark skies and blue flowers – the perfect accompaniment to Lightning Dust’s Fleetwood Mac meets Mazzy Star vibe. This is a perfect late night jam – watch this with a glass of wine and a loved one tucked next to you, and let your love stave off the cold.

The Playlist

LITTLE GIRLS Concepts (Paper Bag)
T-dot’s most notable pop-laureate deals in warbly murk and hazed out visions, always with the all important pop hook in tow.

DO MAKE SAY THINK Other Truths (Constellation)
Our nation’s finest post rockers prove once again there’s no beating there jazzy blend of kraut rock grooves.

THE MANIPULATORS Ease Up On The Breakdowns (Neptoon)
These boys give us a taste of life from the wrong side of the tracks.  Black leather and motorcycle greased anthems for the dispossessed.

CHAMPION Resistance (Saboteur)
Cerebral party-monger throws down a sweaty, booty shaking gauntlet for our nation to enjoy.

BLACK MOLD Snow Blindness Is Crystal Antz (Flemish Eye)
Stoned out 8-bit warbled lo-fi electro weirdness from mangled cranium of Chad Vangaalen.

SUN WIZARD Maybe They Were Right (Self Released)
Rising stars of the Main St. set deliver a statement of intent: to rock you like Tom Petty fronting the Strokes.  Deadly

OWEN PALLET Heartland (Domino)
National treasure and pop genius Owen Pallet (aka Final Fantasy) sounds like primo-Eno at his avant-pop finest.

FANSHAW Dark Eyes (Mint)
Local mood-music-maker Fanshaw outlines the evolution of love to heartache, with the clear vision of a pro twice her age.

The Gig

The Anvil Experience at Venue – Sat Feb 13th

If our theme this week is to celebrate Canadian musical greatness then I have no choice but to recommend the Anvil experience next Saturday. Anvil’s story is so much the story of our nation and the people and culture that make this the best country in the world. Anvil – thrash metal originators that never got their due. Anvil – a couple of buddies who stuck it out and watched eachother’s backs when no one else cared. Anvil – a band that rocks harder than groups half their age. The Anvil Experience looks to be a great night. First the documentary film will be screened, then the band will take the stage and rip into their classic jams, like Metal on Metal. Here’s a chance to dip into a part of our nation’s heritage that is mostly overlooked, but nevertheless a vital part of the Canadian story.
