About Mogiana Coffee

09-coffee-beans

In a world of fair-trade and ethical coffee, one Vancouver company takes a unique approach to growing its coffee … family.

Since the 1890s, the Carvalho Dias family has been growing Arabica coffee beans on their family farm in Brazil and for five generations have carried on the family tradition of not just growing award-winning coffee, but also operating a farm with the utmost respect for the environment and their employees. In 2009, Cristina Dias founded Mogiana Coffee and began selling her family’s coffee in Vancouver.

Mogiana Coffee is a truly handcrafted single-origin coffee made from a rare type of Arabica bean: the Bourbon Coffee, which is characterized by its full body, profound aroma and smooth finish. The family was awarded the honour of Best Coffee in Brazil in 2004 at the prestigious Cup of Excellence, and is the only family in Brazil to have been a finalist in the competition every year since its inception – demonstrating a commitment to quality, year after year.

But the family believes that much more goes into a good cup of coffee than the best beans – it involves a healthy dose of humanity and social responsibility.

Their ecological commitment includes handpicking beans, which reduces CO2 emissions, treating all wastewater, generating their own hydropower and maintaining the existing native forests. And as responsible employers, they ensure a high standard of living and wage that goes well above the industry average for all of their employees. In fact, today nearly 50 families live on the farm in a self-sufficient community that includes housing, a school, a chapel, a hospital and even a full-size soccer field!

For Mogiana, being fair and ethical isn’t a label, it’s family tradition.
