Zulu Report: “Dinosaur Jr.” And The Awesome Week Of Giggery

VFW-Oct-2009-Scout-277

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

KING KHAN & BBQ SHOW | Title track from the album Invisible Girl out now on In the Red Records.

So you think you can belly dance? Perhaps you have heard about the new reality show featuring Montreal natives Arish Khan a.k.a. King Khan and Mark Sultan as the ever-flamboyant host and sidekick, who together serve up a tasty tandoori mix of garage rock, doo-wop, and 50’s inspired exotica for you flex your trapezius and abdominal muscles. Well, even if you can’t gyrate and allure, you are still invited to the Invisible Girl papa-oom-mow-mow party rock happening. Right from the twangy guitar hook on the title track, Khan and Sultan’s songs rekindle the immediacy of The Cramps ghoulish romps as well as the Pebbles era 60’s tambourine shaking jams. But unlike all the hordes of garage revival bands out there now, these guys actually embody the subversive spirit of the musical era they so love. Together the anti-hero duo embrance the spectacle of rock and roll, especially live where their stage antics degenerate into drunken hedonistic hoe-downs gone wrong…beautifully wrong. More sounds here.

The Playlist

CHROMEO – DJ Kicks (Sony)
Strangely at Zulu we get asked “what is good work out music”… haven’t they seen our staff? Best ask Chromeo for some cardio pumping grooves.

ISAAC HAYES – Hot Buttered Soul (Stax)
40th Anniversary reissue of this landmark soul platter – it oozes with cool to this day!

ALEX CUBA – s/t (Caracol Records)
Cuban folk funk from the sleepy town of Smithers, BC! A virtuoso hybrid of Latin, Caribbean, soul and rock.

ZERO 7 – Yeah Ghost (Warner)
After all the ubiquitous downtempo of recent years, it is nice to see mainstays like Zero 7 remaining on top of the game.

THE MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS TRIBUTE PROJECT (Black Hen Music)
Steve Dawson’s archaeological music tribute to this obscure 30’s era gospel/blues/folk outfit revealed a jewel encrusted artifact of song.

VARIOUS FIVE YEARS OF HYPERDUB (Hyperdub)
This is awesome! Kode 9, Burial and a host of other amazing UK dubstep material – all long out of print!

SPARKLEHORSE + FENNESZ – In The Fishtank (In the Fishtank)
Two disparate sonic strands collaborate on this dense listen that offers nice office electronic ambience and burned out guitar heroics.

DANIEL WESLEY – self titled (Universal)
His laid back major label debut… is this the next Jack Johnson? Check it.

NOBUNNY – Love Visions (1234 GO Records)
Demented trash rock for nights when anything is possible or you just feel like walking around with a bunny mask on.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Signal Morning (Cloud Recordings)
For fans of Olivia Tremor Control, we finally have some new heavenly sweet 60’s jingle jangle tunes.

The Gig

DINOSAUR JR. | Tuesday November 10th at The Commodore

Instead of sitting at home playing guitar hero, you should set off the couch and see a modern day equivalent of Hendrix, Page, or Satriani. Yes, J. Mascis and his signature Jazzmaster guitar into wall-to-wall Marshall stack sound has finally moved beyond the realms of indie-rock guitar god and into the lore contemporary shredding axe masters. Dinosaur Jr. have always been about Mascis’ over the top volume and big muff fuzz box ear-splitting leads, and for this sole reason alone we suggest that everyone should see a Dinosaur Jr. show at least once in their life. Just as influential as Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr. are proof that alternative rock rewrote the role of guitar in bands – replacing finger tapping speed with the ability to create dense textural noise and the visceral freak out tool that spawned grunge! Earplugs recommended! Hear more here.

  1. Jeff, drop everything, grab your board, and jump in the Westy en route to the Dinosaur Jr. show the next night (11th) in Victoria!

  2. I had written off the show expecting to have to work Weds night (stat holiday and salary and all…) but it looks like I’ll be off by 9-ish. I’m going to see if I can get a ticket tomorrow still and if so I’ll go!

    Love me some Dino Jr.

  3. Such a great show.It is too bad 80% of the crowd could not shut the “F” up and show some respect when Lou opened. He had a great sense of humor about it, sounded amazing and Dinosaur Jr was so rock and so f’ing amazing!

  4. How was it, mang? I stopped by tonight to see if there were any tix left, but the door man said no, and to check back at 11:15. Judging by the 20 people waiting around for extra tickets/scalpers, I decided to roll on home, deeply saddened…

I bet the show was excellent – Sugar is a strange venue tho.
