Zulu Report: Digging “Art Brut” & Getting Down To Atlas Sound

IMG_2745

Our friends over at Kitsilano’s Zulu Records once again present their weekly Scout feature, the Zulu Report. Within, staff from the West 4th music store provide The Track, the song that is on heavy rotation that week; The Playlist, which is pretty self-explanatory; The Gig, the must see show of the week; and The Glance, a view ahead to music on the horizon. From their ears to yours, enjoy…

The Track

ATLAS SOUND | Walkabout (featuring Noah Lennox of Animal Collective)

In tribute to the loyal customer who last week related the lovely story regarding having the grave misfortune of waking up in a stranger’s apartment without any knowledge of the wheres and whos of their immediate surroundings…we can confirm that being disoriented can be both terrifying and strangely exhilarating. With this in mind, we turn you on to the disorienting blissful music of Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and Atlas Sound fame! Layers of processed guitars, sythesizers and voices are carefully affected so that the original sounds become blurred, distorted and transformed into more abstract swells of textural ambience. On his latest release Logos, blasts of noise sit with twinkling melodies, constantly shifting the listening experience between welcoming bubbly pop and blown out eerie dissonance. Add the floating voice of his Animal Collective pal and you have one of the more eccentric singles you will hear all year – indeed Walkabout will take you to an entirely new place. More here.

The Playlist

JULIAN CASABLANCAS – Phrazes for the Young (Sony)
With a Vancouver show announced you will want to know what this Strokes guy is up to…. Synths!

FUCK BUTTONS – Tarot Sport (ATP Records)
Imagine lo-fi Emily Carr grads making mashes for post-rave cheap mondays jeans commercials.

CORB LUND Losin’ Lately Gambler (New West)
Back with his Hurting Albertains, Corb pours more whiskey in your wounds.

BUILT TO SPILL There Is No Enemy (Warner)
Hooks galore! Say what you will but these Northwest indie-pop darlings have always made you smile.

MILES BENJAMIN ANTHONY ROBINSON Summer of Fear (Saddle Creek)
Rhodes piano led heartfelt indie rock troubadour with a long name and a deep voice.

ART BRUT vs. Satan (Downtown Records)
A few years ago these guys made everyone at the Pitchfork festival seem like chump change. Loud 60’s rock with a bit of monty python to it.

KINGS OF CONVENIENCE Declaration of Dependence (Emi)
Imagine if Simon and Garfunkle magically remained young innocent and beautiful inside the bodies of two young men from Norway. I know it is desolate there, but this desolate?

VARIOUS ARTISTS DEF JUX PRESENTS IV (Def Jux)
Seriously, still the best names in indie hip-hop – Aesop Rock, El-P, Rob Sonic, Chin Chin, Camu Tao and more.

CALIFONE All My Friends are Funeral Singers (Dead Oceans)
Criminally underappreciated, these guys from Chicago charm us with their swampy no expectations blues.

VARIOUS FLY GIRLS! Revenge of the Super Female Rappers (SOUL JAZZ)
A double disc of obscure NYC rap divas! Soul Jazz is hands down the best reissue label rolling.

The Gig

BOYZ NOIZE | Thursday November 6 at CELEBRITIES

Face it…winter is here to stay and cold rain will become the desultory norm for the weeks and months to come. Well Vancouverites what are you going to do? Dance your ass off to some old-skool meets new Berlin techno as a disco ball skull is lowered from the club’s ceiling. Creating buzz that measures second only to Justice’s over the top electro shakedown, Boyz Noize a.k.a. Alexander Ridha has made quite the name for himself as a DJ and producer since starting his label in 2005.  Having remixed everyone from Feist to Bloc Party, his “ear-orgasms” have kept him on a non-stop jet set club circuit. Catching him here at home and in a small club is a cool treat… but then of course a flight to Ibiza this time of year would be welcome. More sounds here.
