Old Irish Heather Location Soon To Be Replaced With A Nando’s?

gal_scream_janet-leigh_psycWord around the cobblestones of Gastown says that the reno-refit at the old Irish Heather location on Carrall (that caused the venerable pub to move into new digs across the street together with the Salty Tongue deli and the Shebeen) is pretty much done and that the address will soon see the arrival of a new tenant, a Nando’s. If you’re unfamiliar with Nando’s, it’s a Portuguese-themed fast food chicken chain of restaurants that operates in 26 countries on five continents. I first test drove it in South Africa back in 1995 (where Nando’s originated) and couldn’t finish my meal. Like most of you, I would have preferred something cool, independent and local to have taken over the location, but you can’t always get what you want…

  1. eek … what next? a mcdonald’s? at this rate water st/carrall st will soon only be home to crappy tourist shops, furniture stores and chain ‘restaurants’ ….

  2. No not Nando’s. Disgusting. I guess they were the only ones that can shell out th cash for the new rents that the Salient Groups is asking. Why couldn’t Blakes come back? or the old shnitzel place that was run by a Korean family. Their shnitzel was better than my Oma’s.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the Alpen club opened a beer garden themed restaurant in Gastown mit Schnitzel, Heffe Weizen und RotKraut….

  3. Boooo-urns! So will that be nando’s and vera’s in the same block? That’s such a shame that spaces with such character will be filled with uninspired trash. Just a sign of the times I suppose.

  4. Nandos is awesome! I am very excited.

Gastown needs more lunch options. I am starting to get very sick of the same usual haunts. Vera’s is a good start but after eating there for the past 6 days I am getting a little burned out. And fat.

I have zero objection to chain restaurants coming into the area. They provide close, reasonably priced predictable quick food. These are the things I desire during a busy day when there is not much time for lunch.

  5. Quite frankly, I really think the neighbourhood has lacked chicken since the demise of Prime Time…. Prime Time, however, was far more Street.
