On The Scout Ipod Today: “Brand of Skin” by Folk Implosion

I first got in to this Sebadoh offshoot when I was about 21 years old, so about 15 years ago (jeez). It was at the end of a five year long Dinosaur Jr. fetish. I remember my big brother recommending that I buy their CD at Lyle’s Place in Victoria. $18.99 was a lot of money to me back then, but I listened to it on the bus home (in my Sony discman – that’s right) and recognised Dinosaur Jr’s Lou Barlow instantly.  I knew I’d found a new favourite band. Pretty much every song that they released was golden in my mind. Two years after their first record they scored when their single Natural One jumped out of the soundtrack to that disturbing NYC film, Kids (1995), which climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts (like you give a shit) and got the UNKLE remix treatment. Here’s some more if you’re down…

  1. J. Mascis is GOD. Funny you should get back on the Dinosaur Jr. train, as I have just very recently started playing ‘Where You Been’ by Dinosaur Jr. like … non stop for two weeks. I think we had the same fetish at the same time.

I don’t think Lou Barlow played on this one, but it was recorded with a band.

Thanks for the tunes – still liking Pinback.

  2. Loved Sebadoh/Folk Implosion/Dinosaur Jr. Dinosaur’s last album, Beyond, is very good too, and Lou makes his return!
