Kentuckablog: A Live Blog Of My Trip To Bourbon Heaven…

Once again it was a bit of a rough start as the boys went a bit long last night (we shall overcome, et cetera). Woke up in Lexington and went to Keeneland racetrack to see hundreds, maybe thousands of Kentucky bourbon diehards line-up to have Bill Samuels and Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks sign special white and blue limited edition bottles of Maker’s Mark. Then it was upstairs into the choicest seats possible to dine and gamble on the horses. 11 races in all!

A restaurant interior on the road to Lexington...

We left 21C and Louisville this morning and resumed the bourbon trail, touring the Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey distilleries. Now in Lexington at the Hilton. More photos coming soon. In the meantime, take a look below for a new batch from yesterday. Good, fascinating times…

Ron Oliver, Bryant (from London), Friuli Girl, Jay Jones, Simon Kaulbach, Darryl MacDonald, Shaun Layton, and Trevor Kailes closing The Brown

I’ve arrived safe and sound in Louisville, Kentucky with Vancouver bartenders Shaun Layton (George), Jay Jones (Voya), Trevor Kailes (Granville Room), and Simon Kaulbach (Boneta). We are joined by a troop of barkeeps from the UK as well. Ron Oliver, formerly of Blue Water Cafe and now the Maker’s Mark ambassador to Canada, is our shepherd. You’ve seen the itinerary already. The first photo galleries are uploading as I type.

  1. Andrew,

Photos are great, looks like y’all had a great time.

Any chance of doing a post on some of the things you learned? Things like production process, how long it is aged, blending, the grains used etc….

The things that a booze nerd would like to know.

    Thanks.

  2. Yessuh. I have a fifteen minute film in the works for later in the week, plus a full post. There’s also a story that will run in the next Westender.

  3. Hey canadian boys!! This s Laura from the UK-bar-team 🙂 Just say that those 6 days have been amazing!! I m really happy we all met n shared such an experience!!!

    P.S.: Beautiful pictures Andrew!!

  4. Bobby Joe commented on my website and it didn’t shatter into a million pieces? WTF?

It was an honour and a privilege to meet you, Bobby Joe. If I ever make my way down there again I’ll be sure to drop by the distillery again. I’m sure the rest of the boys would do the same.

  5. Glad to hear more words are coming! The photos make my head spin! The price we pay for living in a digital world! 🙂
Look forward to reading your stuff.

  6. Great photos. I looked through them and don’t see any evidence that you and your friends ate a “hot brown” while you were in Kentucky. Which begs the question – who was your local tour guide, if none were eaten? Shame on any local who omitted such an important part of Kentucky culture. It is the best meal on earth! You can actually feel your arteries clogging as you eat.

  7. What kind of camera are you using and what settings…your pictures are fantastic…
