We Destroy Tokyo, Sexy Books & Monty Python

Our carefully considered first rate list of super sweet things that we’re either doing, wishing that we could do, or conspiring to do this week…

WEDNESDAY

While looking for details of a gig at the Dunlevy Chapel later this week I stumbled upon this:

Kwantlen Polytechnic University fine arts department presents “Freshly Squeezed”, its annual art exhibition by Kwantlen students. If you’re kicking about looking for something to do – pop around to the Chapel and take in the show. It’s free.
April 8 -12 | 12-6pm | Dunlevy Chapel | FREE

THURSDAY

Cinebar
“It was fifty years ago this spring that maestro Federico Fellini began production on La Dolce Vita, one of his keystone works, and one of world cinema’s most fêted films…Pacific Cinémathèque and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura join in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the making of Fellini’s masterpiece.” And when they say celebrate- they aren’t fooling around – the folks at Pacific Cinematheque are going to give you free booze when you come to see La Dolce Vita tonight. Talk about value added! They’ve joined forces with Philippe Dandurand Wines to offer movie goers the pleasure of sampling wines that have been specifically chosen to complement the feel and region of the film. From a recent media release: “Wine has always been the ultimate accompaniment to dining and fine art — and now, film.” Tonight’s thoughtful choice: Folonari Pinot Grigio. I’ve had this one on my calendar for a while now, can’t wait.
April 9 | 7:30pm | Pacific Cinematheque Theatre | under ten bucks

We Destroy Tokyo, DLMB and Sexy Books at the ANZA
Right from the source: “Local Rock and Funk bands: We Destroy Tokyo, DLMB and Sexy Books take the stage all featuring a slew of brand new signature moves, like ‘Lightning Kick’, ‘Slam Chord’, and ‘Brutal Tuning’. Also this night will feature a photo booth for friends and glam-bots to get photos taken, and DJ Vincent Van Damme banging out eclectic musical tones later on in the evening. Check out what people will be talking about, in the future.” Scout note: For all of you crazy Aussies who like it – a fresh stock of Vegemite is on hand for purchase ($10) in the Tiki Lounge.
April 9 | 7:30pm | ANZA | $10 ($20 with the Vegemite)

She Sells Sanctuary
If your looking for something a little more on the mellow side this evening – think about tuning in the CBC to hear Cindy Bisaillon ruminate on the idea of sanctuary. Bisaillon talks about her way of life in an off-the-grid cabin in the woods, “interweaving her thoughts with tales from a naturalist, a refugee and a monk”.
April 9 | 9pm | CBC Radio – 690 am dial | FREE

Kode9 at the Biltmore
Originally from Glasgow, Kode9 is known in the UK for their fusion of reggae, breaks, hip hop, jazz, funk and house.
April 9 | 9pm | Biltmore | $15 try Zulu or Red Cat

FRIDAY

Monty Python Saves the Day
It took me a long time to find something Scout-worthy to do on Good Friday. It’s a holiday, and a lot of things are out by virtue of the fact that no one wants to pay time and a half for staff when half the city is sitting in a ferry line-up anyway. But then I found it, the perfect Good Friday activity for those of us still stuck in town: “The Gospel according to Monty Python: Brian (Graham Chapman) is born in Nazareth on Christmas day and receives a visit from the Three Wise Men – until the star moves a little further, and they decamp to the stable next door. It’s not the last time he will be mistaken for the Messiah. Despite his best intentions he falls in with the People’s Front of Judea and becomes a figurehead for the Separatist movement, until he is arrested and tried, just before Easter… Voted the funniest comedy ever in a UK poll, the Python’s best film was taken off the prohibited films list in Aberystwyth, Wales, earlier this year, 30 years after it was banned for blasphemy.”
April 10 | 11:15pm | Vancity Theatre | $10

Plen+y Good Friday
When Plen+y has a warehouse sale, they make it worthy of mention on the Scout List… 60%-90% off AND the promise of new stock every day? Worth checking out.

SATURDAY

Eat Local
Start your day with a trip to the Winter Farmers’ Market at WISE Hall to pick up some hearty root vegetables, home-baked bread, crafts, and plenty of other cool bits. Visit EatLocal.org to see the full list of vendors (Scout goes for Pasture to Plate Little Qualicum Cheeseworks and always a visit to The Fruit Guy for dried Okanagan fruits to snack on) or click here for a Complete Seasonal Availability Chart.
April 11 | 10am – 2pm | WISE Hall, 1882 Adanac Street at Victoria Drive | FREE

Pale Air Singers at the Chapel
Didn’t know anything about them so I googled the Pale Air Singers and found a handy write up by the all knowing CBC (New Music Canada): “The Pale Air Singers is a collaborative recording project between Calgary’s The Cape May and Victoria’s Run Chico Run. After threatening to work together for several years, both bands holed up in the studio over 2-3 weeks, and, in an intensive haze of creativity, hashed out an album. With very few expectations placed upon a final result, the bands illustrated a remarkable collaborative and improvisational rapport. As such, the album should serve as a strong indication of two differing musical and regional backgrounds collaborating to create one fluid document. Where The Cape May and Run Chico Run are concerned, this is hopefully a sign of future collaborations to come”. The Chapel is a cool place, this sounds like a cool band. Could be a swell evening. Have alisten on the bands myspace page. April11 | 8pm | Dunlevy Chapel | not sure how much this is gonna cost – guessing about $12?

Cherry Blossoms at Nitobe Gardens
“Find peace of mind beneath the splendor of cherry blossoms as you drink in the tranquility of an authentic Japanese tea ceremony and relax to the soothing tones of shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and koto (Japanese harp). Take a guided tour of the authentic Japanese garden, enjoy some refreshing matcha, origami demonstrations, the photo and haiku challenge, try on a traditional Yukata and enjoy a Japanese bento dinner. Top off your day with a tour of the garden by lantern-light, a magical, once-yearly event at Nitobe that should not be missed. Nitobe Memorial Garden is considered to be the one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America and among the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan. Entrance to the Nitobe Memorial Garden is by donation during the Ohanami event.” Couldn’t have put it any better myself.
April 11 | 3pm – 8pm | Nitobe Memorial Garden | $6 entry to the garden (Bento box $10)

SUNDAY

Sunday at the Railway Club
I’m guessing that you already know of an Easter Egg Hunt in your ‘hood so I won’t waste time telling you my top picks for the day…and I don’t need any more competition scoring those chocolate eggs (those little kids are crafty buggers). So – for something less Easter and more Rock n’ Roll you might think about hitting the Railway Club…After 27 years of running the club sister and brother team Janet and Steve Forsyth are moving on and tonight is your chance to thank them for their contributions to the Vancouver music scene. A long line-up of musical talent will be on hand (as will cold beer and good laughs).
April 12 | Doors open at 5 | The Railway Club | By donation

MONDAY

TUESDAY

Angus & Julia Stone play the Media Club
“Hailing from the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney, Angus & Julia Stone form two halves of a musical act with a natural gift for telling emotive, honest and beguiling stories.” Best way to decide if this would be the show for you is to have a listen. But do it soon – ’cause this gig will sell out.
April 14 | 8pm | Media Club | Best $15 bucks you’ll spend this week
